This page refers to two instances in wrestling where a manager threw in the towel to save his charge, who was too brave/stupid to give up and live to fight another day. It’s probably happened more than twice, but the two instances that influenced this scene were Bob Backlund losing the WWF title to the Iron Sheik after Arnold Skaaland threw in the towel and Sabu refusing to tap out when Rob Van Dam put him in a sickle hold on ECW TV, resulting in Bill Alfonzo throwing in the towel. Incidentally, neither of those cases involved a squid-man as a referee.
