Royal Rumble Drinking Game

In honour of this weekend’s WWE Royal Rumble, it’s time to post the updated version of the Royal Rumble Drinking Game! It was updated because, in our drunken stupors, we regularly misremembered the actual rules and made up new ones to replace them. My friend Roger (of Micro & Macro fame) created the original Royal Rumble Drinking Game that this is based on, which I posted here a few years ago.

Royal Rumble Drinking Game

Base rules:

Every time a Wrestler enters the Rumble, you drink
Every time a Wrestler is eliminated, you drink

You’re taking a minimum 59 drinks, so… yeah. That’s a thing. Try not to die.

Wrestler Selection Rules:

Everyone picks two wrestlers, either by selecting names or numbers, depending on how many entrants to the Rumble are known.

*Shots can replace finishing your drink

When your Wrestler enters the Rumble, finish your drink.
When your Wrestler is eliminated from the Rumble, finish your drink.

Hardcore Additional Rules:
If your Wrestler eliminates another Wrestler, everyone else drinks twice.
If a Wrestler does a finishing move, drink.

Rules We Always Forget
If your Wrestler eliminates another player’s Wrestler, they finish their drink, then drink twice.
If your Wrestler is eliminated by another player’s Wrestler, you finish your drink, then drink twice.
If one of your Wrestlers eliminates your other Wrestler, finish your drink twice.
If an exceptional chop is done, drink.
If Ric flair woos, drink.

Live Rumble Wildcard
In a live Royal Rumble, there are usually surprise entrants. If all 30 entrants have not been named before the Rumble starts, each player should choose a different Wildcard entrant.

If your Wildcard selection enters the Rumble, everyone else finishes their drink when your selection enters.
If your Wildcard selection does not enter the Rumble, finish your drink when entrant number 30 enters.

NJPW – Katsuyori Shibata vs. Tomohiro Ishii

YOU GUYS! You NEED to watch this. I’ve been meaning to get around to it for quite a while, but holy shit, it’s really good. It’s Katsuyori Shibata vs. Tomohiro Ishii from the A Block of the 2013 G1 Climax tournament, the August 4th show. All you need to know to set this up is that Shibata is the one with the black trunks and kickpads and Ishii is the bald guy with lightning bolts on his shorts.

Now watch two Japanese pro wrestlers beat the fuck out of each other in front of a crowd that IS REALLY INTO THAT SORT OF THING.

NXT – Antonio Cesaro vs. William Regal

This is a match that I’m sure a lot of you have heard a lot about already, but I just got around to watching it today. If you haven’t, here you go! You should definitely give it a watch, because NXT is pretty much where guys go to have great matches that nobody will see. It’s televised here in Canada, but the time slot is terrible, so I end up having to go out of my way if I want to see some of the standout matches.

The major takeaways from this match are that Cesaro’s regular appearances on NXT are pretty much his best appearances on WWE programming, except that nobody gets to see them, and William Regal is pretty much entirely wasted in his role as a commentator. That guy could be educating so much of the roster on how to get to the next level, and really getting guys over, but nope.

AJPW – Toshiaki Kawada vs. Shinjiro Otani,

My adventures in the land of All Japan Pro Wrestling’s past continue, this time outside of the glory years of the 1990s and into the dark days of the 2000s. From the establishment of the Triple Crown to the NOAH split, there really aren’t any title matches that I would consider bad. Some are certainly lesser than others, but at worst they were all right. Post-split is a different story, as All Japan’s roster gets pretty thin. A saggy Genichiro Tenryu and a Keiji Mutoh whose knees are held together with athletic tape and hope anchored the title scene until late 2003, and those matches were… well they happened. I preferred Tenryu’s stuff from that time to Mutoh’s, who was already relying on the shining wizard/figure four formula by that point. As it turns out, I find that formula really dull. In 2003, Toshiaki Kawada began the run that was probably intended for him during the ’90s, except he kept getting hurt. This match is the finals of a tournament to crown a new champion after Shinya Hashimoto vacated the title, and the start of Kawada’s 10 defence run as champion. Also, it’s really good.

AJPW Triple Crown – Vader (c) vs. Mitsuharu Misawa – May 2nd, 1999

This might be Vader’s greatest match ever, and was another of the series of fantastic bouts that I’ve been watching on my History of the Triple Crown DVD set. I didn’t expect much going into it, because the previous match, in which Vader beat Akira Taue for the vacant Triple Crown, was pretty mediocre. I figured Vader would perform better against Misawa in front of the Tokyo Dome crowd, but not this much better. It’s like two different guys wrestled those matches in the same gear and using the same move set.
