And apparently I’ve become pre-Horsin’ Around Bojack Horseman.

Holy shit this news post has started off weird. Speaking of weird, I’ve been reading the Wikipedia entry for the DDT Ironman Heavymetalweight Championship title history, and it is completely bonkers. Some of the notable champions include three separate ladders, a stuffed Jun Kasai doll (multiple times!), a promotional poster for a WAVE show, several elementary school children, a dog, a cat, and the writer of Headlocked, who I collaborated with on a Chikara comic a million years ago.

Those of you who follow me on Twitter are aware that entirely too much wrestling stuff is happening right now, as I’ve been attempting to keep up with this year’s G1 Climax tournament. However, if you want hot takes like “Tama Tonga is watching any chance he had at being a pushed talent slip away,” and “(some combination of Ishii, Honma, Goto, Shibata, Elgin, EVIL) are about to murder each other, and it’s going to be great,” you should follow me on Twitter, because there’s going to be a lot of that.

I have returned from Emerald City Comic Con! And then proceeded to sleep through pretty much all of Monday. I had a great time in Seattle, and very much enjoyed meeting a whole new audience. A hearty welcome to those of you checking out the comic online for the first time, and thank you to those of you who picked up the omnibus. I’m hoping to be back next year!

With that said, I’m going to return to my slumber cave after I finish this update.

HEAT #194 – Fatty Bombed

I reeeeeally love how this page turned out. Usually when I get big ideas like the middle panel’s multi-image motion powerbomb/flying cross body combination the actual drawing of said ideas makes me hate my past self for coming up with it. This one went unusually smoothly, even the cross body landing which I have learned from experience is difficult to get right.

My friend Jay is going to be annoyed at me as a result of this page, as he was the one who won the contest way back when and created Invincinator. On the other hand, he can’t get TOO mad, since Invincinator was only supposed to show up in a brief cameo on page 37 and then ended up being present throughout the entire second book. I’m not going to miss having to draw his crazy Dragonball Z hair, though. Not at all.

On Saturday: We’re back to even strength at 3 wrestlers a piece. Who can secure the advantage? And will new spatula technology be required to peel Invincinator off of the  mat?

I love awful sequel subtitles. A lot. Any title ending in “the re(blank)ening” WILL get a laugh out of me, pretty much guaranteed.

Oh, and I also forgot about the update yesterday because I spent pretty much all day at work and then writing an essay for school. It was really nice of my professors to make all of the semester’s major assignments due in a three day span next week. It was also nice of the University to decide that a semester condensing four months worth of work into two months.

Special man-pain was such a goofy joke the last time these two teams clashed that I decided to bring it back, especially once I wrote the spot where Dos got crotched on the turnbuckle.

On Wednesday: Hot tag! He’s cleaning house! That doesn’t make sense, as cleaning a house typically isn’t an activity that involves violence!

HEAT: Classic Wrestling Moments #5

Oh god this page took forever to ink. And to try to figure out the perspective of the arena in the background. The second panel was easier to work out than the first in that respect. The first panel… I’m not sure why I thought that perspective was accurate; it was probably one of those “ARGH I’ve been trying to figure this out for three hours, it’s close enough” moments, but I can’t remember.

Los Gordinflones Negros’ tag team finisher, the Fatty Bomb, harkens back to the drawing in my sketchbook that became our favourite pot-bellied Luchadors. I should scan it, because it was the start of the process that eventually led to HEAT existing. That original drawing was of an unnamed wrestler whose design I ended up using as the baseline for the Fatties delivering a ridiculously over-the-top powerbomb to another unnamed wrestler.

CONTEST TIME!

Like the last contest, the winner of this one will get to have a wrestler of their creation show up later in the comic. This one will make you work a little harder, though. In each of the Classic Wrestling Moments thus far I’ve hidden a piece of real-world wrestling trivia. The first person to email jeff@rentathugcomics.com and correctly identify the hidden wrestling factoids in CWMs 2, 3, 4, and 5 (CWM 1 was the subject of the first contest) will be declared victorious! If nobody is able to identify all four, whoever gets the most will be the winner.
