HEAT #138 – Breadbasket Made of Previously Eaten Bread

John Bradley’s line about Dr. Fat’s breadbasket being surrounded by a few hundred pounds of previously eaten bread is the kind of line that makes me love writing this comic, because in the context of the series it’s not even that weird. Art-wise, I put the WWE photos back to work on the dropkick, which used a few different photos for reference. The third panel was from Daniel Bryan’s front dropkick off the top rope, and the last panel is a combination of said dropkick and a Gail Kim dropkick, the photo of which may be some of the only evidence that she’s actually employed by that company. I’ve drawn wrestlers hitting the ropes so much that I can do it from memory, but Invincinator being short and hitting the middle rope, a la Rey Mysterio Jr, was inexplicably challenging.

I also expanded my wrestling DVD collection a bit this afternoon after some fortuitous raiding of the clearance section at Zellers. After wading through easily a hundred old UFC DVDs I found the ECW December to Dismember PPV from 2006 (which I vaguely remember hearing was terrible, but it’s been pretty good so far) and The Spectacular Legacy of the AWA, which I’m looking forward to, especially if it’s in the same quality range as the Rise and Fall of WCW and ECW DVDs. Although for five bucks it doesn’t exactly have a high bar to clear.

On Saturday: Does kicking a fat man in the fat actually do any damage? If so, can Invincinator capitalize? Why am I asking you when I already know the answer? Just read it on Saturday.

HEAT #137 – Small Children Make Excellent Projectiles

I included this page (and the previous page) in the portfolio I took to the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo to show publishers and pros in an attempt to get some paying work. Attempt being the key word there, since although my portfolio review meetings went fairly well, I don’t expect to be getting any calls back anytime soon. HEAT was pretty much directly responsible for the illustration work I’m doing right now with FORCE Pro Wrestling, though, so that’s pretty awesome. If you’re in Alberta and a wrestling fan, keep an eye out, because there’s a lot of cool stuff going to be announced about that promotion in the next little while.

The last time I remember drawing a dropkick was the double dropkick during the Dick/Ron vs. LGN match, which a quick site search confirms is, in fact, the last time I drew a dropkick. Since then I’ve picked up a few of the photo specials released by WWE magazine, which has solved their being a pain in the ass to draw. I think this one was referenced from an Eddie Guerrero photo.

On Wednesday: Invincinator see, Invincinator do. It’s probably not the gorilla press, though.

HEAT #136 – Not The Start They Hoped For

I forgot to (or gave up on trying to, I can’t remember) wedge into the ring announcer’s speech that the matches in this round are worth four points. For other Super Max Challenge rules you may want a refresher on, the little standings thing in the sidebar now takes you straight to the rules page. Actually it’s done that for, like, a month, but now you know if you didn’t already. The matches in this round are a bit on the long side, compared to what I’ve done so far. I think this one is around the same length as the Dick & Ron vs. Los Gordinflones Negros from Chapter 5 (now available with special bonus commentary in HEAT: The Space Age of Pro Wrestling Volume 1 at Happy Harbor Comics), give or take a few pages. You totally want to go buy it.

On Saturday: The hoped-for start continues to be elusive for Johnny Law and Invincinator.

HEAT #133 – He Has Faith in their Stupdity

Guess who forgot it was Wednesday because he was putting price tags on boxes of Hell, Inc. books and making photocopies for my portfolio? Me. That’s who. Fuck. Sorry, team. That’s right, we’re a team now.

The production assistant lady was a guy in the script, and actually drawn as a guy in the first panel before it occurred to me that “hey, there are like, NO female characters in this comic right now besides the ring announcer who is essentially a prop, maybe I should use this opportunity to practice drawing girls.” So then I did. Her hair is based on a girl I went on a date with a few days before I drew this comic. Other than that little tidbit, I don’t have a lot to say about this one, since it’s mostly a transition into the first match of the tag team round. Rounds? What? Take this opportunity to hit up the Super Max Challenge Cup rules refresher!

On Saturday: No comic, becasue I’ll be at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo with copies of HEAT Volume 1 and Hell, Inc. #1 and #2!

HEAT #132 – They Totally Weren’t Planning to Slam Him. Honest.

It’s hard not to take shots at the formula behind tag team wrestling… so I do. Panel two points out that I fucked up the locker room stalls on the last page, although I’m not sure why I felt it necessary to point that out right now, since I suspect most people wouldn’t have noticed or cared. It also highlights my go-to for making “talking heads” seem interesting, which is perspective. Especially when I have four or five characters far apart from each other in a big square room.

The HEAT Volume 1 trade paperback proof came in the other day, and has been approved for final printing. I’m very excited to be able to debut it at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, but if you can’t make it to that show, fear not! It’ll be available at Happy Harbor Comics and by online order once I recover from the show.

On Wednesday: Invincinator and Johnny Law head out for what may be their last match of the Super Max Challenge as Prison Asteroid 32J attempts to start their comeback in the standings.

HEAT #131 – Chapter 9: The Second Round

Invincinator has probably been my favourite character to write in this second volume, because he’s so oblivious to the reality that he is not, in fact, well over 500 pounds. And that he is, at best, at nipple-height in a staredown. Although I’m sure his opponents’ nipples are very intimidated.

Art-wise, this page was almost entirely “try to make guys sitting around a big room talking look interesting.” Luckily, I’ve drawn enough pages where that was the point of it that I’ve developed a bit of a toolbox for dealing with making talking visually interesting.

On Saturday: Doc continues to try and lay out his strategy for Invincinator and Johnny Law, and they continue to make it more difficult than it needs to be.

Yet another installment of “oh god why did I think it was a good idea to write this” theatre. I was pretty intricate with the backgrounds of the first two panels because I was well aware that using multi-image motion to show a hurricanrana wasn’t going to be conducive to backgrounds, and I hate going an entire page without having one. It just feels lazy.

I’m chipping away on the HEAT collection. Mad Doc Crockett and Dick the Bastard doing commentary on the whole thing is pretty time-consuming, but will hopefully pay off in the long run. Next on my hit list are the front and back cover.

On Wednesday: Can Rod Black recover from getting spiked on his head or will El Gangster II maintain his momentum?

I’m pretty sure the line “Listen up, you motherfuckers!” is from somewhere, but I can’t remember where. At first I thought it was from the song “Fucking in the Bushes” by Oasis, but upon further review that is not correct. The middle panel with Doc shouting went a lot easier than I expected it to. I went into it anticipating that I would hate my past self for writing that particular panel composition, but once I figured out the perspective I got through it fairly quickly.

Johnny Law will be the first wrestler in the comic currently holding a singles championship to appear in a match when he takes on “Pretty Boy” Paul Meyers, starting on page 120-something. I’m kind of surprised it’ll be taking 120-some pages for that to happen. Before that match, though, Prison Asteroid 56Q’s El Gangster II takes on 17E’s Rod Black.

On Saturday: Rod Black vs. El Gangster II begins.

Dr. Fat’s powerslam didn’t turn out quite as brutal-looking as I’d hoped, and in retrospect there should have been another panel showing Invincinator being pancaked into the mat. Although if he was pancaked, Dr. Fat may have tried to eat him, which would have gotten into the territory of that fucked up Marvel comic where The Blob eats somebody. I can’t remember what book that was, but seriously, what the shit!?

Oh, and sorry, Jay. But don’t worry, Invincinator will be back later! I’m not sure when, specifically, probably somewhere in the 130-150 page range. Dr. Fat will also be returning somewhere around then.

This weekend I’ll be participating in the 12 Hour Comic Challenge at Happy Harbor Comics. It’s like the 24 Hour Comic Challenge, but with less hallucinations. If you’re in Edmonton you should stop by and say hi, and also donate to Big Brothers & Big Sisters, which the whole thing is designed to raise money for.

Also, on March 20th I’ll be at the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show with the Open Door Comics group, which will feature the release of Hell, Inc. #2: Candied Sheep Day.

HEAT #109 – The Slam Not Heard ‘Round the World

There wasn’t a background in the middle panel until I finished the rest of the pencils and decided that the page was a little too bare. The down side? Arena backgrounds take forever. I kind of miss the prison yard from the early chapters, those backgrounds were really quick. The second and third panels are easily my favourites on this page, though, so the effort was worth it.

Speaking of effort, I’ve started working on laying out the HEAT Volume 1 collection over the last couple of days. Chapter 1 has been scanned and formatted, but the page template still needs work. Ideally I’d like to have the book ready by the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo in June, which seems doable.

On Wednesday: Can Invincinator overcome the Doctor’s Fat-ness?
