HEAT #302 – The Champ Is Probably Here

We’re back to the thicker lines after last week’s sojourn into new inking techniques. I think the problem is that I press fairly hard to get an even line, so it’s really difficult for me to make background lines thin enough to avoid thick foreground ones.

We’re also back to the classic Dick/Kong relationship, wherein Kong lifts Dick up over his head and then throws him somewhere that hurts.

In other news, my Hockeypocalypse series debuted on comiXology! Buy, and definitely RATE it, because that helps spread the word to other users and expand the audience.

This is the first page I drew after the 2014 Emerald City Comic Con, and involved trying out some new inking techniques I picked up during portfolio reviews. That’s why the lines don’t have the same thickness as usual.

It’s also really hard to draw gorilla presses without it looking like the wrestler executing the move is just straight-up lifting the other guy by his junk. Which I guess WOULD make it a much more debilitating move…

Next Week: Robots being good at math is a stereotype, and an offensive one, at that.

In other news, I’m trying to find a printer for HEAT Volume 2 again. It’s going about as well as it did the last time. The unit prices are still about 25% more than where I want them to be, but they’re not as absurd as the prices I’ve been getting for the Hockeypocalypse trade paperback that I want to put together. The HEAT one is expensive, but at least it’s also huge. Anyway, I’m still hoping to be able to have that ready for my convention appearances this fall.

If his face were made of metal, he would look like Dr. Doom, which would be pretty cool. Actually… that gives me an idea.

This also smacks of The Mountain vs. The Viper, except less horrific. A lot less horrific.

And thus concludes today’s newspost, in which I only make references to other media.

Wait, scratch that. Go watch NXT Takeover, because it was crazytown-bananapants-good. THAT IS VERY GOOD. Better than Arrival, overall, although Zayn/Cesaro is still the best NXT supershow match.

Early update because… I dunno, why not. I’m writing Hockeypocalypse Season 2 and doing some concept drawings for it and wanted to take a break, so HEAT update. And Mighty Kong getting his legs messed up by a maniac with a viking helmet.

I thought Monday was Sunday. Stupid long weekend.

Also, apparently the flying headbutt is the new move that everyone acts aghast about and claims they’ve supported being banned for years. I’m not sure when the wrestler safety high horse became a popular ride, but it seems in line with the current societal trend toward all of a sudden being upset about how most sports destroy your body. Speaking of which, that topic came up on We Talk Wrestling, which I was on last week.

Mighty Kong is like the wrestling pope with his indulgences. But not the TNA pope, because Kong is a top star who wins a lot and draws money.

HEAT #282 – Underwhelmed

The panel across the top of this strip was a ton of fun to draw. I channeled teenaged me’s weekly experiences watching the Attitude Era staple guy in ring/guy on stage promo duels into that one.

I also channeled adult me’s desire to draw top hats and Snidely Whiplash moustaches into the character design of Orville Barnum.
