The amount of strips that I’ve had drawn weeks in advance and then forgot to post on a Monday because I was preoccupied with something else is… I dunno. A bunch. The upside of being my own boss is that I can do things how and when I want to. The downside is that the sheer volume of shit that I need to remember sometimes overwhelms me.

Much like Smashmouth Smith’s vertebrae are overwhelming him. In that he’s acutely aware of each of his vertebrae and how they’re accordion-like at the moment.

Also, if you’re in Winnipeg this weekend, I will be too! I’m appearing at C4 – Central Canada Comic Con in Winnipeg from October 31st to November 2nd.

HEAT #311 – Literal Nicknames

I think I’ve figured out exactly two good angles for the Stone Cold Stunner, and most of the time I only use one of them. This one. It’s also tough to draw guys falling out of the ring. It’s such a weirdly specific physical motion that’s often really hard to find photo reference for.

On that note, the hardest photo reference to find for the HEAT card game I’ve been working on? The Avalanche splash in the corner. I had to search “Stinger Splash” to get anything useful, and that move does not hold up to photography, it turns out. It looks really good in motion, but as a still it looks really weak. You’d think there’d be more easily searchable photos of fat guys doing corner avalanches, since they do it pretty much all the time, but apparently whatever photos there are of of those online aren’t appropriately named to be searchable.

When I started drawing HEAT, clotheslines were one of the moves that I found very difficult to draw. It always looked really clunky and stiff. Not the wrestling kind of stiff, just kind of bad. And then I was sent some Japanese wrestling magazines by a reader (thanks, Ted!) and had absurd amounts of reference material for dudes smashing their biceps into somebody’s face. And dropping each other on their heads. Now when I draw a clothesline I rarely need to worry about how to compose the shot to ensure it looks like it hurts, because I have about 200 photos of actual Japanese guys wrecking each other’s faces.

In other news, buy and RATE Hockeypocalypse on comiXology. Because the more money I make from comics, the more comics I draw. Speaking of which, I’m over halfway done two separate books right now, and that’s ignoring the Hockeypocalypse trade paperback that’s going to the printers right now.

This one’s a day late, because in Canada we get Remembrance Day off as a holiday. Which made Monday feel like Sunday. Which made me forget it was the day I was supposed to update. DERP.

I think next to Dick the Bastard, Smashmouth Smith may be the character whose finisher has been seen the most in the course of the series. Which is kind of funny, since he’s only been in one actual match. I guess being a staple of Classic Wrestling Moments will do that for a guy.

Next Week: The match ends! Or it doesn’t. ONE OF THOSE TWO THINGS WILL HAPPEN.

Guess who got busy with work and forgot what day it was yesterday? Hint: me.

Wolfric Farnsworth makes his second appearance, having previously been in one strip to set up a phone call bit. My writing is very deep, y’see. We’ll see a bit more of him shortly, then he’ll go away for a while. So he’s basically every other side character in the series. He’s also the same species of alien as Wildman Harris, of being terrible in the Super Max Challenge non-fame. I think this is the first time we’ve seen two aliens of the same species. Also, we get the answer to a question a fan asked me on Twitter. Or in the comments. I can’t remember. Where am I?

Next Week: Wolfric Farnsworth offers career advice, and also his couch.

Finally, Sharkenstein HAS COME BACK… to Classic Wrestling Moments. And is apparently encouraging me to rip off The Rock, who made his return on an entirely-too-long episode of RAW on Monday. It’s been so long since I’ve drawn Sharkenstein that I entirely forgot how to do it, which made my first few cracks at him on this page… interesting. Gonna go with interesting.

This one’s a little later in the day than normal because I was at PWA Hysteria tonight. There’ll be a review up in the next couple of days, including some video that I shot.

For those of you who may be wondering “how could it seem like a good idea to draw a guy running up another guy’s back, stomping his head, then doing a backflip,” the answer is that it’s not a good idea, it’s a terrible, very complicated idea. If anyone ever needs proof that I am, in fact, an idiot, they can point to this match and say “he wrote that while being aware that he would have to draw it later.”

Oh, and the time caption reading 3:16 on the same page in which a Stone Cold Stunner is attempted wasn’t a coincidence.

Aaand we’re back! I wonder if there’s a medal or trophy or something for being a webcomic creator who actually returns from breaks. I always take a break around Christmas time, and usually another one at some point during the year to avoid burnout.

Smashmouth Smith joins the ranks of throwaway characters that ended up getting bigger roles than I had intended. In his first appearance (back on page 74) he was listed in the script as “TV Champion.” I don’t recall how exactly he ended up developing into Smashmouth Smith, but now he has a backstory and a personality and a role to play in a later chapter (quite a bit later, maybe not even this year). Although in retrospect giving him pretty intricate tattoos was not the brightest design choice I’ve ever made.

On Saturday: Chapter 8 begins with the Super Max Challenge pre-show publicity shoot! Also, there might be some punching.
