Sometimes in my scripts I forget to write Dusty like Dusty, and his lines feel off. Then I realize that I didn’t  make up any words and a few nonsense words later and he’s sounding good and proper.

In other news, do you like DRM free digital comics? Do you like me being able to draw HEAT (among other things) instead of having a real job? Well I have some good news for you! Drawing crowds always results in me populating them with cameos. This must have been drawn when I was marathoning Portlandia on Netflix, because the dude in the middle-right reminds me of Fred Armisen. And of course we have the obligatory nods to my other comic work.

Mighty Kong is like the wrestling pope with his indulgences. But not the TNA pope, because Kong is a top star who wins a lot and draws money.

In other news, I’m going to be a guest on Jason Mann’s Wrestlespective podcast pretty soon, which you should all check out. We’ll be discussing the 2006 ECW December To Dismember main event, the Extreme Elimination Chamber. Our conversation will likely be far better received than the event itself was. HEAT #282 – Underwhelmed

The panel across the top of this strip was a ton of fun to draw. I channeled teenaged me’s weekly experiences watching the Attitude Era staple guy in ring/guy on stage promo duels into that one.

I also channeled adult me’s desire to draw top hats and Snidely Whiplash moustaches into the character design of Orville Barnum.

HEAT #281 – Gorilla’s Poo Typhoon Returns

I watched the 2014 Royal Rumble last night with a group of friends, and we all got very, very drunk. I checked out what people were saying about the Rumble on the internet afterward, which was a mistake. Some of you internet folks really need to relax and keep in mind that WWE doesn’t have to do what you want them to. SHOULD they capitalize on Daniel Bryan being as over as any babyface they’ve had in a decade? Probably. Will you crying about it on the internet force them to bend to your will? No. So relax. Find something you ENJOY watching. I stopped watching every Oilers game because they just made me angry.

In other news, I need to get caught up scanning HEAT pages again. I keep forgetting about it because I’m in the process of drawing Hockeypocalypse 3, and I need to make sure it’s done by the first week of March so it will be ready in time for Emerald City Comic Con, because I needs to get me some more work.

Next Week: It took almost 300 pages to do a scene that looks like a Monday Night RAW segment. TROPHY, PLEASE.

HEAT #280 – No, Really, Buck Hogarth TOTALLY Wants To Fight Kong

No champion has ever wanted to duck a scary challenger. Nope. Never.

Buck Hogarth is fun to write. He’s essentially if we got to see both sides of Hulk Hogan (the hero and the self-serving douche) at the same time. Which is kind of weird because within the universe most of the characters only get to see one side of Buck or the other, but you the reader get to see both.

In unrelated-t0-HEAT news, Hockeypocalypse issues 1 and 2 have fancy new high-res digital versions available for just a dollar(ish, depending on what currency you use) each at DriveThru Comics! You can also get the HEAT volume 1 digital comic for $2. For less than 5 bucks you can have just shy of 200 pages of hilarity on your phone or tablet. So, y’know, you should do that.

HEAT #279 – Back From The Commercial Break

Dick the Bas… er, Richard the Lionheart’s robe is loosely based on the entrance robe that Keiji Mutoh (the Great Muta) has been wearing over the past few years, with it’s huge fluffy collar. It’s also one of those things that’s a ton of fun to design until I realize I have to draw it more than once, at which point I want to punch past-me for coming up with it. Also, I’m finally learning how to draw luchador masks that I’m not annoyed by. So that’s fun.

Next Week: Dusty Trails drops some knowledge. But not any weight.

A Word From Our Sponsors

The first HEAT guest comic is the first HEAT episode of 2014! This was drawn by my friend Johnni Kok last summer, and I finally go to the part of the story where I can post it. This guest strip came as a result of Johnni and I wanting to work on a project together, but wanting to do a short test run to make sure we could work together without driving each other crazy before diving into a full-fledged comic book project. I was initially going to have him draw one of the Classic Wrestling Moments interludes, but then he threw out the idea of a commercial – specifically, a condom ad. That idea was immediately hilarious to me, and thus Buck Hogarth’s Champion condom sponsorship was born. This is also the first page I ever lettered digitally. That was an incredibly tedious learning process. I got better, later, and was able to make the balloon tails curve.

Next Week: It’s back to the usual HEAT art style, and this time we’re backstage at Galactic Wrestling’s Main Event!

Ah, Mighty Kong. Goddamn does he give me scale issues. Kind of like Wooly Bully, but moreso. His Gorilla Press to the floor finisher comes from an old wrestling video game of which I only have a vague recollection from a Nintendo Power article. In it, somebody’s finisher was throwing opponents out of the ring, even though it was a real wrestler who definitely did not do that as a finisher. I believe it was Vader or Ultimate Warrior.

HEAT #239 – Like Twenty Questions But Stupid

Internet, I am very tired. I’m also very glad that while I had time and significantly lower stress levels, I drew a lot of HEAT pages. After I finish posting this I’ll be starting on HEAT 252, which will be the first HEAT page I’ve worked on in about three weeks. I’m also watching the replay of Old School RAW right now, and becoming very acutely aware of how much the RAW themes have dropped in quality over the years.

Also, I’m glad I kind of learned how to draw girls, or this chapter would have been a disaster. Seriously, I’ve been drawing drawing comics on the interwebs for just shy of 7 years now and I just learned how to draw not-completely-terrible women in the last, like, six months.

I’ve had some Twitter conversations about the comic with fans lately, which I encourage. It’s always fun talking to people who read this thing, it’s a nice reminder that I’m not just doing it for my own entertainment.

Next Week: Caroline’s dating rules.

EDIT: The Twitter plug-in updated and now I have to do some kind of authorization crap before it shows up again. I’ll fix it later.
