HEAT #465 – Trails’ End part 7

The hardest part about this short story was making the background of Doc’s rivalry with Dusty more-or-less clear to the reader without actually explaining the details or relying on them having read HEAT beforehand. It was originally published in the Kayfabe anthology. I think I talked about that earlier, but if I haven’t, uh, this originally appeared in the Kayfabe anthology. Anyway, because it was in an anthology, I knew most of the people who read it wouldn’t have known about the comic beforehand, so I needed to try to convey the plot point of the Doc/Dusty enmity without just flat out saying “these guys used to be rivals and this screwjob reference happened at this old show and then Doc trained Dick and now stuff is happening.” How successful was that? Well, you guys probably aren’t people to be asking, since you’ve presumably been reading this comic for a while.

HEAT #243 – Sage Advice From Another Doc Crockett Guy

The title joke is totally a reference to a comment from the last strip. Also, holy shit did I get bad at remembering what day I’m supposed to post these. Apparently having a more-than-full-time job makes you forget to do fun things.

Drawing the cityscape in the first panel was fun. I’m not sure at what point I decided Evseedub had a crazy system of loopy roads or whatever in the sky, but I like how they look in the few backgrounds I’ve done of the planet where we can see the outdoors. Also, I’ve learned how to draw Cobra Clutches that don’t look stupid.

Classic Wrestling Moments #12

Guess who got busy with work and forgot what day it was yesterday? Hint: me.

Wolfric Farnsworth makes his second appearance, having previously been in one strip to set up a phone call bit. My writing is very deep, y’see. We’ll see a bit more of him shortly, then he’ll go away for a while. So he’s basically every other side character in the series. He’s also the same species of alien as Wildman Harris, of being terrible in the Super Max Challenge non-fame. I think this is the first time we’ve seen two aliens of the same species. Also, we get the answer to a question a fan asked me on Twitter. Or in the comments. I can’t remember. Where am I?

HEAT #4 – Trick Question?

This was a page that I was looking forward to from the beginning, although the text took up more room than I thought it was going to. Doc’s Cobra Clutch on Ragnar Rasmussen got recreated in Classic Wrestling Moments #1 last week. The crimson mask must have been from one of his other title matches (since he’s clearly not bleeding in CWM #1). And that’s how I just explained to myself what the hell I’m doing. Good talk, self!

My favourite thing on this page is definitely Dick’s reaction to being kicked in the gut by Doc.

So I watched the last hour of TNA Impact tonight, and I have to wonder what exactly they’re trying to accomplish? I was pleasantly surprised by the Nasty Boys, who were surprisingly entertaining in the ring, but overall the plan seems to be rehashing late ’90s WCW and WWF. The Angle getting “screwed” thing was just… stupid.

HEAT: Classic Wrestling Moments #1

HEAT: Classic Wrestling Moments #1

The first HEAT post… is a promo for the actual comic, which starts next week. Mad Doc Crockett is the trainer for HEAT’s lead, Dick the Bastard, and a former headliner in the wrestling biz. In my original conception of the comic he was pretty much just a support character that was only there to provide exposition by explaining stuff to Dick. He also wasn’t called Mad Doc Crockett, just Doc. Then Doc Collins, which was okay but missing something. Then after I wrote him for a couple of pages he became Mad Doc Crockett (named after NWA promoter Jim Crockett). After a while Doc became so much fun to write that he went from expository support character to the second lead.

I’m thinking that these “Classic Wrestling Moments” are probably going to serve as between chapter breaks, because I like them but they’d probably get old if I did them too often. Maybe I can get some guest artists for them… hm, I’ll have to look into that. Could be a nice bit of variety.

Oh, and there’s a fun bit of real-world wrestling trivia hidden in this strip. The first person to correctly guess what it is in the comments section or via email (jeff@rentathugcomics.com) will get to have a wrestler of their creation appear later on in the comic! So bust out the Google, or your own encyclopedic brains. Hint: it’s in the caption box.
