HEAT #313 – Instant Replay

I missed posting this on Monday because I slept through Monday after a very, very long weekend at the Saskatoon Comic & Entertainment Expo, where I was awake 50 out of the 57 hours of the trip.

Trying to figure out how to incorporate instant replay into a static medium was tough. I ended up going with the rounded corner “TV” panels approach from The Dark Knight Returns, which I think turned out okay.

In other news, I have no idea what that double arm hold is called, but mid-90s All Japan LOVED that hold.

HEAT #253 – Special Man Pain 3: Sackpocalypse

Actually watching RAW is a good reminder to update the comic. So is inking a page of it while watching RAW. Tiger Khan is probably the first time I’ve successfully drawn a wrestler with a leaner build who is still muscular. The first attempts were with Vinny LaGrazo and Rod Black, which was not overly successful. LaGrazo leaned up towards the end of his run, but he was much too thick early on. Khan being taller helps, as LaGrazo was short and ripped, so it was hard to draw him without adding bulk. If I add some bulk on Khan, his height keeps him looking leaner than Dick, which is good enough. The longer I’ve worked on this comic, the more I’ve discovered that the wrestlers’ sizes are more important in a comparative sense than an absolute one; so it’s important that Khan is taller and leaner than Dick, but I don’t worry too much about what the exact difference between Khan’s 6′ 5″ and Dick’s 6′ 0″ would look like on the page.

Next week: Jewelry and faces get broken. So it’s like a normal page except jewelry also gets broken.

HEAT #210 – The Blorg Learns About Vertebrate Creatures

Writing commentary has to be one of my favourite parts of the writing process, entirely because of weird bits of dialogue like this page’s exchange between The Blorg and John Bradley. Because why would a creature without a spine know about the importance of spines to vertebrate creatures during a wrestling match?Other than being a former professional wrestler. Seems like somebody would have mentioned to him along the way in his career that the back is a good place to injure on a vertebrate. I’m thinking that perhaps The Blorg wasn’t all that good of a wrestler.

Uno’s low dropkick in the last panel might be the best dropkick I’ve drawn in the entire series so far, and I didn’t even use reference for it. I think learning may have occurred at some point in the process of drawing this series! Snapmares are also much easier to draw when the characters involved are kind of the same size.

Also, RAW 1000. Holy shit it’s good so far. As I’m posting this, the wedding of AJ and Daniel Bryan is underway. To someone not watching WWE, that sentence probably seemed really bizarre.

Next Week: Dick the Bastard does something he CAN do, but SHOULDN’T do, according to the referee. He argues this point.

HEAT #197 – False Finish Ahoy!

So last week I talked about how easy reference makes drawing some moves, but how some moves are really tough to find decent reference for. The Bossman Slam, it turns out, is a pain in the ass to find reference for, and is also hard to draw because it’s such a weird motion. Most spin moves don’t tend to pull the opponent in and then spin with that momentum, they usually reverse it for the appearance of power instead of finesse. It’s really hard to get that momentum reversal to translate in comics.

I shot some video for FORCE Pro Wrestling this afternoon, then ended up learning how to take back bumps. My back is sore. Are those two things related? POSSIBLY.

Next Saturday: Chekhov’s gun suggests that nightstick MIGHT get used on somebody.

HEAT #195 – Dead Mascots Society

At no point in working on HEAT, until about five seconds ago, did I ever think I would have a Dead Poets Society joke in the comic in any context. Mostly because I typically forget that movie exists until it gets brought up in classes.

I use a lot of photo reference to help me draw the moves, and sometimes finding the right reference for what I’m trying to draw is a huge pain in the ass. For example, any time I want reference for somebody standing on the top rope, I pretty much have to try to take those photos myself at live shows, because finding them online is more hassle than it’s worth. Back suplexes, on the other hand, take roughly ten seconds looking at a Japanese wrestling magazine to find references from 17 different angles. I’m pretty sure it would take less effort to find a picture of a back suplex where somebody was on fire in a Japanese wrestling mag than it took me to find reference for the Bossman Slam on WWE.com. And that’s keeping in mind that Wade Barrett’s new finisher is the Bossman Slam. Madness.

HEAT #162 – “Uno” Is The Number Of Brain Cells He Has Left

Guess who was doing homework all last night and forgot that it was Wednesday? Me. The answer is me.

The corner spring spot took more panels to make clear than I thought it would, but it actually wasn’t as tough to draw as a bunch of way simpler moves. The back suplex was pretty easy, too, but I found a pretty good reference that just needed a little bit of tweaking, because for some reason nobody in Japan does the leg scoop thing that North American wrestlers do all the time. It’s also a reference back to a move Dick learned the hard way earlier, because I really like to do little call-backs for those sorts of things, even though I’m probably the only one who notices them.

On Saturday: Dick gets tired of throwing Uno around like a sack of potatoes. Good thing it’s a tag team match, then, hey?

HEAT #53 – Seeing Double… Dropkicks, That Is

I keep writing dropkicks into matches and forgetting that they’re pretty hard to draw. Dos’ looks all right, but Uno’s is… weird. My favourite panel is the second one, though, with Dick crumpled on the floor next to the guard rail. Speaking of crumpled on the floor, I penciled page 63 last night, which features a piledriver that I’m quite pleased with.

I don’t think I’ve mentioned it before, but Los Gordinflones Negros are the second design in this series inspired by Big Van Vader. The previous instance was Wooly Bully’s elephantine entrance helmet (waaaaaay back on page 10). This one is probably a little bit more obvious, since LGN’s outfits are based on Vader’s ring gear, which, as far as I can tell, has been basically the same for the bulk of his career. And by “based on” I mean “pretty much the same except they don’t say ‘Vader’ on them”. And they have luchador masks instead of Vader’s head-jockstrap thing. And a bunch of little subtle differences only interesting to me and intellectual property lawyers.

On Saturday: Dos channels his inner Hulkamaniac.

HEAT #11 – Bullied

I say this a lot, but this page was FUN. You also now know why I didn’t bother to name the masked wrestler (in the tags section at the bottom of the post he’s referred to as Masked Jobber). This page tells a lot about Wooly Bully’s move set, which basically centres around being huge and using that size to smash people. Which is a pretty much the standard “giant” wrestler schtick, except that in the comic you don’t have to watch him pondorously shuffle around the ring looking like he’s going to have a heart attack in between moves (I’m looking at you, Great Khali). I typically don’t enjoy the giants, because their matches are pretty much all the same, but for some reason I’ve got a bunch of giants in the comic (although in this case they’re mostly space monsters). Hopefully I can make them more entertaining than their real-life counterparts.

In other news, I spent some time in the last couple of days creating a new roster page with all of the main wrestlers we’ve seen so far. Right now there are only three profiles (Dick the Bastard, Mad Doc Crockett, and Wooly Bully), but I’ll be adding to it as the comic progresses. I’m pretty pleased with how the pages I’ve done so far have turned out, and am looking forward to the roster expanding a bit (which will happen around chapter 3).

HEAT #6 – Learnin’ Time part 2

This page was so much fun to draw. The back suplex was my favourite thing to draw, with the reverse chinlock being a close second. The wrestling pages are always a ton of fun to draw, although a lot of the time they end up being the most complicated.

I watched about half of Smackdown last night, and have come to the conclusion that the Undertaker’s “American badass” gimmick from a few years ago has gone a long way toward wrecking his classic “dead man” gimmick. Especially since he seems to be mashing them together into some sort of zombie redneck. Actually, I should keep zombie redneck in mind for later, when the HEAT roster expands.

Keep in mind that next week, updates will be on Wednesday and Saturday!
