HEAT #262 – A New, Special Kind Of Stupid

I was listening to the Live Audio Wrestling podcasts recapping New Japan Pro Wrestling’s G1 Climax tournament last week and John Pollock was talking about the frequency of countout teases but the lack of any actual countouts. It’s kind of the reverse of WWE’s policy of ridiculously inconsistent counts so that guys can do whatever they want on the floor without having to worry about the count, and then every few months having someone be counted out to the confusion of the audience. In HEAT, I approach countouts as an actual way that wrestlers will try to win a match. Hence Dick the Bastard piledriving a guy on the floor and then making no attempt to actually get him back into the ring, or the wild brawl from the Invincinator/Law vs. El Gangster II/Dr. Fat tag match from the Super Max Challenge.

Next Week: Buster Pallas is an angry, angry man with a ham-shaped head. Also, a G1 Climax cameo!

One of the things that really bugs me in wrestling is the devaluation of a lot of really killer moves, especially in indy wrestling. Recently (this is going to date the shit out of this post, but whatever), BJ Whitmer suffered a match-ending neck injury in a Ring of Honor  match against Mike Bennett when they used a piledriver on the ring apron as a mid-match spot. I’m of the mindset that a piledriver of any kind is a finish except in the most epic battles (for example, Shawn Michaels kicking out of the Tombstone in his retirement match). A piledriver on the floor? That guy stays home selling the injury for at least a few weeks.

Also, if you look closely at the fifth panel you can see a couple of cameos, particularly a certain Kaiju Big Battel villain as well as George, one of the protagonists of my other ongoing project, Jeff Martin’s The War of 1812. Incidentally, now that it’s August, we’re back to the weekly schedule, so check that out as well. The more of you who check it out, the more likely I am to pick up more paid work from those guys, which is good for everyone. But especially me.

Next Week: Buster Pallas busts a blood vessel. He may have anger management issues, or a guy named Dick the Bastard might just make a really terrible babyface. Hard to say.

HEAT #260 – Heroism

So this particular character was a result of a fairly common occurrence, which is local artists drawing something goofy and telling me I should make it a wrestler in HEAT. Sometimes I do! This clam-headed fellow is Muscle Mussel, courtesy Sue Withers. It’s hard to see in the shrunken down version for the site, but he’s got a tiny version of his head on the front right hip of his trunks.
Also, guess who forgot it was Monday on Monday because he didn’t watch RAW? Hint: me. It doesn’t help that I’m in the final push to finish a new book, and have been going hard to get that done super early.

Next Week: Even more heroism from “the Lionheart.” That was sarcasm.
