And thus concludes the match, and Smashmouth Smith’s championship reign. The king is dead, long live the king!

I really need to get drawing, as I’ve only got one week left on the buffer. Well, more accurately I need to get drawing HEAT, I’ve been drawing quite a bit. Since the last HEAT strip, I’ve drawn 21 pages (and counting) of Hockeypocalypse 6, which is the third issue that will be included in the forthcoming Hockeypocalypse Season 2 book. It will also be available digitally as a single issue via comiXology. A lot of you have been buying Hockeypocalypse that way, which is awesome. For those of you who like print collections, it’ll be out early next year. Possibly as early as January, but definitely in time for convention season resuming for me in April. Convention season might be incredibly busy, but more on that later.

I feel like I’m just recovering from my trip to Winnipeg for C4, which is good, since I’m headed to Lethbridge, Alberta in just two weeks for the Lethbridge Entertainment Expo. I’ll be at the Renegade Arts Entertainment booth signing copies of Redcoats-ish: Jeff Martin’s War of 1812, Hockeypocalypse, and HEAT. And probably cursing the idea of driving 5 and a half hours through Alberta in late November to anyone who will listen, but it’ll be my own stupid fault.

On the wrestling front, I recommend checking out Lucha Underground. So far it doesn’t particularly strike me as “lucha” particularly, but I’ve watched the first two episodes and they were pretty good. Commentary isn’t very good, because modern wrestling, but has some really interesting visual elements and a nice, quick one hour format. I’ve come to the conclusion that, as far as my current tastes go, a one hour wrestling show is pretty much ideal. Three hours of RAW is nigh-unwatchable, but even a mediocre-to-bad episode of NXT or ROH flies by.

HEAT #319 – Challenge Accepted

I’m very tired, you guys. C4 – the Central Canada Comic Con – took place in Winnipeg last weekend, and I got back to Edmonton at about 7:30 this morning, after getting up at 3 AM to catch my flight. C4 was a success, and a pretty fun first trip to Winnipeg. Being on the convention floor for 28 hours, however, makes me never want to stand up again. Much like Smashmouth Smith now that he’s fallen on his neck enough times that he can’t feel his legs.

The next, and final, stop on this year’s convention tour is Lethbridge Entertainment Expo on November 22nd and 23rd.

The amount of strips that I’ve had drawn weeks in advance and then forgot to post on a Monday because I was preoccupied with something else is… I dunno. A bunch. The upside of being my own boss is that I can do things how and when I want to. The downside is that the sheer volume of shit that I need to remember sometimes overwhelms me.

Much like Smashmouth Smith’s vertebrae are overwhelming him. In that he’s acutely aware of each of his vertebrae and how they’re accordion-like at the moment.

Also, if you’re in Winnipeg this weekend, I will be too! I’m appearing at C4 – Central Canada Comic Con in Winnipeg from October 31st to November 2nd.

Japanese wrestling is fascinating. There are human beings who make a living by allowing other human beings to lift them up into the air and then slam them down on their heads. A bunch of other human beings pay money to sit in a seat that has a good view of said head-dropping.

Actually screw Japanese wrestling, HUMANS are fascinating. And fucking weird.

Also, everyone should thank/eulogize Tomoaki Honma, who provided the photo reference for Richard the Lionheart landing on his neck. The photo didn’t have any information about when it was taken, but I’m guessing it was at least two years ago, as Seiya Sanada was suplexing Honma in an All Japan ring. That wasn’t information you needed to know, but it was information you deserved to know. What does that even mean? I don’t really know. At this point I’m writing some serious stream-0f-consciousness shit in this newspost.

I forgot it was Monday because I fell into a colouring-induced fugue state where time and space were irrelevant. There were only layers and Photoshop shortcut commands. I have no idea how professional colourists can do that every day.

The drop down spot was really hard to figure out how to break into panels, thus joining the ranks of wrestling spots that happen all the time but turn out to be difficult to draw. Naturally, powerbombs and stuff are really easy to draw. That makes sense, right?

You have no idea how much ridiculous pantomime was involved in figuring out how the “turn out, headbutt” counter of that arm hold would work. My initial impression of “just like the normal turn out counter, but with a headbutt” was sorely mistaken upon looking at some video clips and realizing that the turn ever only resulted in the attacker and victim changing roles, but with the same hold.

A quick thank you to everyone who stopped by the Renegade Arts Entertainment booth at Edmonton Expo, as you guys are the ones who make shows like that successful. And oh man, was that show successful. I missed posting this on Monday because I slept through Monday after a very, very long weekend at the Saskatoon Comic & Entertainment Expo, where I was awake 50 out of the 57 hours of the trip.

Trying to figure out how to incorporate instant replay into a static medium was tough. I ended up going with the rounded corner “TV” panels approach from The Dark Knight Returns, which I think turned out okay.

In other news, I have no idea what that double arm hold is called, but mid-90s All Japan LOVED that hold.

As I post this, it’s 7:30 in the morning. I’ve been colouring a print and writing the rules for a prototype card game for roughly 7 hours now. My life is really weird, you guys. Really, really weird. Much like attempting to figure out how to draw a baseball slide that isn’t really a baseball slide, but more of a normal dropkick where the ropes are used for leverage. They’re different kinds of weird, but they’re both things that have now happened in my life.

I have no idea if that paragraph even made sense.

Oh, and I’ll be at the Saskatoon Comic & Entertainment Expo this weekend. If you’re going to be there too, stop by, say hi, and pick up some books or prints or human organs.

I think I’ve figured out exactly two good angles for the Stone Cold Stunner, and most of the time I only use one of them. This one. It’s also tough to draw guys falling out of the ring. It’s such a weirdly specific physical motion that’s often really hard to find photo reference for.

On that note, the hardest photo reference to find for the HEAT card game I’ve been working on? The Avalanche splash in the corner. I had to search “Stinger Splash” to get anything useful, and that move does not hold up to photography, it turns out. It looks really good in motion, but as a still it looks really weak. You’d think there’d be more easily searchable photos of fat guys doing corner avalanches, since they do it pretty much all the time, but apparently whatever photos there are of of those online aren’t appropriately named to be searchable.
