Easter Post and Random Con Story

by Jeff on April 4, 2010 at 1:16 am

Happy Easter, folks. Now, normally Easter isn’t really the kind of holiday I’d bother posting a greeting for, but I just remembered a story I wanted to share from the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show. And it happens to be just after two in the morning right now, so it’s technically Easter.

So early on in the show when things were kind of slow, my friend (and artist of Zenescope’s new series, Merc) Dan was drawing a piece of HEAT fan art. Both of us agreed that Mad Doc Crockett and, more relevantly to the story, Dick the Bastard, were both fairly simple designs. That said, every so often Dan would question me as to specifics, which led to this exchange:

Dan: Dick has some kinda wrist thing, right?
Me: Yeah, he has black tape on his wrists.
Dan: Tape? Okay. And he’s hairy as fuck.
Me: Yes. Yes, he is, in fact, hair as fuck.

The fact that remembering this made me laugh out loud suggests I should go to bed now. But HEAT page 39 is penciled, so pre-bedtime mission accomplished.

Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show Recap

Another year, another Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show. This year’s show was, as always, a ton of fun. I spent the day hanging out with Dan, Rudi, and Brad at our table doing sketches and shilling books. The sketches were kind of an impromptu thing, but ended up being pretty fun and relatively profitable. I got to draw Sergio Aragones’ Groo for the first time ever, which was a lot of fun. Deceptively tough to draw, that Groo. His design is so simple that it’s really easy to overthink it and mess it up. I also did Darth Vader and a girl as an office superhero. Dan got to draw two separate skanky roller derby girls, a much more interesting office superhero (the guy’s job was “death inspector”), and something else that I can’t remember. He also started on a piece of HEAT fan art that I should get on him to finish, because what I saw of it was pretty awesome.

Dan and I also joined Bob Prodor and James Davidge, creators of The Duchess Ranch of Old John Ware for a panel discussion about creating independent comics. The panel was a lot of fun, despite an early scare that there would be more people on the panel than in the audience. With about three minutes to start time, there were two people in the audience. Shortly after we finished discussing cattle (well, James and Dan did. Bob and I just nodded along), people started filing in. Then we attempted to start by introducing ourselves, which led to a discussion on how we should do that. Introduce ourselves? Have each person introduce somebody else? Have the audience introduce  us? Yes, that one was really suggested and yes, we realized that, while probably entertaining to us, it would make no sense. Once we actually got into talking about comics things went more smoothly. Whether or not we offered any sort of insight into independent comic creation is up to the audience, but nobody crapped their pants so I consider it a success.

Okay, one more funny wrestling video for your pre-comic entertainment. One of my friends just sent this to me and it’s awesome, so I had to share it with you guys.

Stephen Regal: Real Man’s Man

So this afternoon I’ve been working on HEAT scripts for the future and watching WWF Survivor Series 1998. It’s the one with the “Deadly Game” tournament to crown a new WWF Champion. The important part for this story is that in one of the quarter-final matches, X-Pac takes on Stephen Regal, who at the time had the hilariously awful “real man’s man” gimmick. I found his so-bad-it’s-good entrance music on YouTube. A little bit of pre-comic entertainment for you.

Wrestlemania 26

CM PUNK vs. REY MYSTERIO
Punk wins, probably with Straight Edge Society interference, pretty much entirely for storyline purposes. If they approach it the right way I think it’ll be a pretty interesting story, probably resulting in another Punk vs Mysterio match to get Mysterio out of the Society in a few months.

EVE TORRES, BETH PHOENIX, KELLY KELLY, GAIL KIM, and MICKIE JAMES vs. VICKIE GUERRERO, ALICIA FOX, LAYLA, MICHELLE McCOOL, and MARYSE
I can’t even describe how little I care about this match.

RANDY ORTON vs. TED DiBIASE vs. CODY RHODES
Probably Orton, but I’d like to see DiBiase win it, since they seem to be trying to push him a little bit, but I’m not sure they quite know how to do it. Maybe have him beat Rhodes to get them feuding and free up Orton to go do something else.

TRIPLE H vs. SHEAMUS
I can see either of them winning it, but for vastly different reasons. If Triple H wins, it’s probably because he refused to lay down for Sheamus on the grandest stage of ’em all. If Sheamus wins, it’s because they’re trying to fix the fact that his championship run made him look like a total pansy.

SHOWMIZ vs. R-TRUTH AND JOHN MORRISON – WWE UNIFIED TAG TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP
The tag division is basically non-existant, so I don’t particularly care who wins this one. The WWE either needs to make a concerted effort to rebuild it’s tag team division so that the titles mean something, or just get rid of them entirely.

CHRISTIAN vs. KANE vs. JACK SWAGGER vs. MVP vs. EVAN BOURNE vs. MATT HARDY vs. SHELTON BENJAMIN vs. DOLPH ZIGGLER vs. KOFI KINGSTON vs. DREW MCINTYRE – MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH
I can think of convincing reasons for about half of these guys to win it. Christian for one last main event hurrah before retiring or settling into a role of talent development (he’d be a great manager for a guy who needs work on his mic skills). Dolph Ziggler seems like he’s being built up for a push. Shelton Benjamin has been around for a while and might get a shot at the main event. On the other end of the spectrum, Evan Bourne is clearly just there to do something ridiculous off of a ladder. Which is too bad, really, because I really like his in-ring work. Pick-wise, let’s say… Christian.

BRET “THE HITMAN” HART vs. MR. McMAHON – NO HOLDS BARRED MATCH
Hard to say. They’re going to make Bret look like a superhero, but Vince is the one who’s going to be sticking around. Maybe Vince brings somebody out Batista to interfere on his behalf but Cena takes him out of the equation, leading into a Vince hates Cena storyline. Which they’ve already done like forty times. I really want Bret Hart to win it, though.

THE UNDERTAKER vs. SHAWN MICHAELS – CAREER vs. THE STREAK
The Undertaker’s streak continues and Shawn Michaels retires… for, like, a week.

JOHN CENA vs. BATISTA – WWE CHAMPIONSHIP
Can it be neither? This will probably be almost as painful as watching the two of them natter for fifteen minutes on RAW. Either Cena wins and feuds with Vince McMahon or Batista wins with Vince’s help somehow. And nobody cares.

EDGE vs. CHRIS JERICHO – WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP
I’d like to see Jericho keep the belt, but I think Edge is probably going to win it, because that’s the way they’re building it. Could also set up and Edge vs. Christian feud if Christian wins Money in the Bank.
