Trying to figure out how the physics of a chair shot look when the target is upside down was a lot harder than I expected it to be. The springboard moonsault was pretty much exactly as difficult as I thought it was going to be.

Okay, we’re back on track now. Sequences like this one are really rewarding to draw because they’re so challenging. Fitting “block a lariat, slap, springboard on the opposite side, moonsault, catch, Tombstone ferris wheel counter” into a 5″x10″ space takes a lot more mental energy to figure out how to execute than scenes like the previous page, which sort themselves out pretty easily. There’s a lot more consideration that needs to go into the visual flow of a sequence like this one. For example, at least one panel needed to break the left-to-right flow to avoid completely swapping El Bastarde and Mascara de Oro’s positions. The slap was the ideal point for that, because it represented a jarring action – since the action going the opposite way jars the reader, it’s best served to do that when it can convey something about what’s happening to the characters.
I don’t know why that turned into a subsection of the comics class I’ll be teaching in the summer, but there ya go.

The genesis of this strip was essentially “what if Vader did Apollo Crews’ press slam/moonsault combo?” And now you know the answer! Although if Vader could do a standing moonsault I would imagine the trail of dead jobbers would have stopped it in short order.

Rey Cielo is one of the many designs that I came up with and then wanted to change shortly after finishing a couple of pages of drawing it. At least with this comic it’s very easy to rationalize any changes as “he got new gear.” It’ll be evident next week, but this bout is another trios match, featuring a bunch of new faces and a few that we’ve seen before.
In convention news, now that my Emerald City Comic Con trip is over, it’s time for the convention season to start on the other side of the table.
