HEAT #337 – Failing To Follow Instructions

Rey Cielo is one of the many designs that I came up with and then wanted to change shortly after finishing a couple of pages of drawing it. At least with this comic it’s very easy to rationalize any changes as “he got new gear.” It’ll be evident next week, but this bout is another trios match, featuring a bunch of new faces and a few that we’ve seen before.

In convention news, now that my Emerald City Comic Con trip is over, it’s time for the convention season to start on the other side of the table. I’ve got a pair of cons coming up right away: Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo on April 16th to 19th, where I’ll be appearing as a guest with Renegade Arts Entertainment. Speaking of which, you’re reading a webcomic right now, which means you should go check out the webcomic I’ve been doing for Renegade. It’s available in print now, too! Can’t make it? I have returned from Seattle’s fabled Emerald City Comic Con! And I am exhausted. It was, however, a very productive trip, and hopefully I’ll have some cool things to tell you about over the next year and a bit as a result.

But being back in Edmonton means being back to posting HEAT comics, and we start off with the post-WrestleMania edition in which we discover that luchador masks are taken pretty seriously. WrestleMania taught us that even WWE can learn when they’re screwing something up and adjust, so maybe Dick will figure out this whole lucha libre thing.

HEAT #335 – Maybe That’s Just How They Talk?

Be prepared for a lot more <Spanish Gibberish>, because I decided I’d rather do that than have some kind of futuristic translation device. That decision was made when I started thinking about what it must be like for wrestlers to go to another country and try to work with someone who doesn’t speak their language, and chose to explore that concept a little bit in HEAT. That can turn out to be a lot of fun when most of the characters are about as subtle as… I dunno, something not very subtle.

I’m headed off to Emerald City Comic Con this weekend, which is exciting. Unfortunately I won’t be there as a vendor, but there’s always next year. This con is probably the closest thing to taking a vacation I’m going to do this year, so I’m looking forward to it. After that, the con season is in full swing, with five shows in April and May! It will either be awesome or I’ll be cast as a Walking Dead zombie by the end of it. But if you’re in Calgary, Regina, Calgary again, Vancouver, or St. Albert/Edmonton, you should come see your favourite cartoonist in one of those cities. Or come see me. That would be good too.

HEAT #334 – Transform And O’Conner Roll Out

This page exists because around the time I was writing it, I really wanted to draw an O’Conner roll. I don’t know why, but sometimes I just get a move or a spot stuck in my head and really, really want to draw it into the comic. Although I suppose impulses like that are why I’m doing this comic in the first place… at any rate, O’Connor rolls are fun to draw.

Speaking of things that were fun, I’ve been learning to colour more efficiently lately, and I did what I think is a pretty cool HEAT piece for the Patreon folks. HEAT #333 – 50% Of The Beast

But not 50% of Brock Lesnar. That’s still like 2000% beast. I’m pretty sure that dude could kill me by blinking.

I remember being really confused the first time I watched lucha libre and somebody got DQ’d for tearing his opponent’s mask off. It was the CMLL show that used to air on the Fight Network in Canada, where the commentary was done by British guys and all of the matches were several years old. Actually MOST of lucha libre was confusing the first time I watched it. “Why doesn’t the pin end the match? Why are those guys just standing there waiting to get jumped on? Why did he start running the ropes because he was gently nudged at them? Who’s blowing that airhorn and how can I have him killed?” It’s really only in the last year or so that I’ve been able to get a grasp on lucha, which has been good timing, because I got to watch a LOT of excellent Barbaro Cavernario matches. Oh, and that whole Ultimo Guerrero vs. Atlantis mask match thing. That was preeeeetty good.

HEAT #332 – Look Waaaaay Up

It might have helped if he had looked up FASTER, though. This page involved watching the Prince Devitt flip dive on a loop for a while while doing gesture drawings to figure out how it should look. I don’t think I’ve done that since Johnny Law’s over-the-shoulder British Bulldog powerslam way back in the Super Max Challenge Final, which was like 120-ish pages ago.

In other news, I just finished drawing Hockeypocalypse #7, which is the first period of Season 3. That one should be on comiXology some time in April, I think. The print release will be as part of the Season 3 TPB sometime in the fall.

And if you’re going to Tsurucon in Red Deer, you should come buy some books, because I’ll be in the artist alley! This will be my first con in Red Deer, and my first anime-themed con. Testing new markets, whee!

HEAT #330 – Knowing Is Half The Battle

This might be the first time that two pinfalls have occurred on a single page. The only opportunity I can recall would have been during the Super Max Challenge Final, but given that it lasted about two thousand pages, I would imagine I spread the falls out a bit.

Given that there’s no commentary to take care of it, some character names: El Bastarde (Dick the Bastard), Tex Abrams (lariat guy), Perro Rabioso (dog guy in the black mask), and Los Antelones (the other team).

Also, thanks to the new backers on Patreon. Your support is humbling, and also incredibly helpful, as it helps keep food in the fridge while I live the life of a full-time cartoonist. Meaning I eat cereal in my pajamas frequently and draw space wrestlers and hockey mutants for money instead of working in an office or something. Which is awesome.

HEAT #329 – LUCHA! LUCHA! LUCHA!

The best strip titles are references to chants that aren’t over with the NXT crowd, right?

I’m excited by the pages that are coming up. I drew them over December and January and it was a total blast to do something that’s pretty different from you guys have seen so far in terms of the in-ring action. I was getting a little bored of the Galactic Wrestling style, and drawing Smashmouth Smith’s goddamn tattoos. Now I get to draw sweet luchador masks and dudes doing flips. Which is super fun.

HEAT #328 – Not A Rule, But A Good Idea

Violence is Dick’s solution to everything. And also the reason he has problems that need solving, for the most part.

I’m thinking the update schedule for HEAT has realistically become “once a week, sometime before Wednesday.” Because holy shit I’m bad at remembering what day it is, apparently.

Anyway, I think this next arc is going to be a lot of fun, if the enjoyment I got from drawing it is any indication.
