Dick being shitty at climbing the ropes started as a throwaway joke in the commentary of the first print volume of HEAT, but for whatever reason it’s stayed in my head and I’ve referenced it a few times since then. I don’t know why, but I like the idea that Dick is presented as a pretty good wrestler who happens to have some glaring deficiencies. Like being bad at climbing the ropes. Which is a little ironic, considering the first banner title banner for the site was an image of Dick leaping off the top rope with a flying headbutt.
Also, if any of you are going to the Emerald City Comic Con in Seattle, let me know! I’ll be attending that show for the first time. I don’t have a booth, but I’ll be wandering the halls and probably getting very drunk, as is my convention pattern.
Next Week: Uninvited guests.
You had only the masked guy from the prison tournament as the only traditional luchador/highflyer/cruiserweight?
I mean there’s the fat twins but this league seems more of an old school heavy(those guts!) but in shape guys kicking each other’s ass.
You’re right, El Gangster II is probably the only traditional cruiserweight/lucha guy so far, since Los Gordinflones Negros are big fat guys who just happen to wrestle like fliers.
It kind of shows the kind of wrestling I like best, which is athletic tough guys beating the shit out of each other. Most of the builds in the comic are total AJPW heavyweights from the ’90s. I do plan on having some smaller, more lithe cruiserweight guys later on, though.
