Aaaaand we’re back! Dick the Bastard has done what Mad Doc Crockett wishes he could do, and then got fired. Which means a new major story arc is about to begin, which I’ve been drawing over the Christmas break. I’m having a blast drawing it, so I’m excited for you guys to get to see what’s coming up. The last panel in this one is the closest I get to the John K./Ren & Stimpy “zoom in way too close” shots. I don’t know why, but I’ve been thinking about those a lot lately. The important things a cartoonist thinks about, y’know?

I’m finishing up Hockeypocalypse 2 this week, which is fun. I’ve already released 2 trade paperbacks in the last six months, so I might as well add a third, right? I’m shooting it for it to be available on January 14th at Happy Harbor Comics, but I’ll keep you updated.

Next: The Christmas Special, and then the story continues on January 5th, 2015! The Christmas Special won’t be up early on Patreon, because, y’know, it’s a date specific strip, but I’ll put some Hockeypocalypse stuff up there, and maybe some HEAT concept art for the next story arc.

I think I drew five more HEAT pages after the buffer ran out last time, which will take us past Christmas. I forgot I still need to draw the Christmas special, so I’ll probably get to that some time this week. In the meantime, I’ve been finishing up the stuff that will go into the Hockeypocalypse Season 2 trade paperback. I’m pretty excited to get to writing next year’s HEAT stuff, though. I think there’s going to be a lot of fun, kinda different stuff.

Cue Vince McMahon lawsuit over the title. It was also interesting to discover that Vince McMahon does, indeed, believe all of the insane things attributed to him by internet fans. That has played into my night’s theme of “people whose products I want to enjoy appearing to actively dissuade me from enjoying them.” I’m looking at you, Edmonton Tire Fires.

My last public appearance of the year is on Thursday night at 7 PM at Audrey’s Books in Edmonton! If you’re in the area, stop by and pick up a signed copy of Redcoats-ish in time for Christmas!

Classic Wrestling Moments #16

This is, subtly, the dirtiest HEAT comic so far by a decent margin.

The idea that bookers in the future set up their card using what is essentially a holographic version of the match creator from a wrestling video game was what made this strip possible to draw without it looking incredibly dull.

In other news, I have returned from the Lethbridge Entertainment Expo, which means that the 2014 convention year is over for me! I don’t have any more convention appearances until March 2015, but will be appearing at Audrey’s Books on December 4th to sign copies of Redcoats-ish: Jeff Martin’s War of 1812 in Edmonton. I’ll also be doing a signing when Redcoats-ish releases in the comic shop market in January, more on that in January.

Speaking of January, I’m a couple of weeks away from my annual Christmas break, which in this case will be the weeks of December 22nd and 29th, with the comic returning on January 5th.

And thus concludes the match, and Smashmouth Smith’s championship reign. The king is dead, long live the king!

I really need to get drawing, as I’ve only got one week left on the buffer. Well, more accurately I need to get drawing HEAT, I’ve been drawing quite a bit. Since the last HEAT strip, I’ve drawn 21 pages (and counting) of Hockeypocalypse 6, which is the third issue that will be included in the forthcoming Hockeypocalypse Season 2 book. It will also be available digitally as a single issue via comiXology. A lot of you have been buying Hockeypocalypse that way, which is awesome. For those of you who like print collections, it’ll be out early next year. Possibly as early as January, but definitely in time for convention season resuming for me in April. Convention season might be incredibly busy, but more on that later.

I feel like I’m just recovering from my trip to Winnipeg for C4, which is good, since I’m headed to Lethbridge, Alberta in just two weeks for the Lethbridge Entertainment Expo. I’ll be at the Renegade Arts Entertainment booth signing copies of Redcoats-ish: Jeff Martin’s War of 1812, Hockeypocalypse, and HEAT. And probably cursing the idea of driving 5 and a half hours through Alberta in late November to anyone who will listen, but it’ll be my own stupid fault.

On the wrestling front, I recommend checking out Lucha Underground. So far it doesn’t particularly strike me as “lucha” particularly, but I’ve watched the first two episodes and they were pretty good. Commentary isn’t very good, because modern wrestling, but has some really interesting visual elements and a nice, quick one hour format. I’ve come to the conclusion that, as far as my current tastes go, a one hour wrestling show is pretty much ideal. Three hours of RAW is nigh-unwatchable, but even a mediocre-to-bad episode of NXT or ROH flies by.

HEAT #319 – Challenge Accepted

I’m very tired, you guys. C4 – the Central Canada Comic Con – took place in Winnipeg last weekend, and I got back to Edmonton at about 7:30 this morning, after getting up at 3 AM to catch my flight. C4 was a success, and a pretty fun first trip to Winnipeg. Being on the convention floor for 28 hours, however, makes me never want to stand up again. Much like Smashmouth Smith now that he’s fallen on his neck enough times that he can’t feel his legs.

The next, and final, stop on this year’s convention tour is Lethbridge Entertainment Expo on November 22nd and 23rd.

The amount of strips that I’ve had drawn weeks in advance and then forgot to post on a Monday because I was preoccupied with something else is… I dunno. A bunch. The upside of being my own boss is that I can do things how and when I want to. The downside is that the sheer volume of shit that I need to remember sometimes overwhelms me.

Much like Smashmouth Smith’s vertebrae are overwhelming him. In that he’s acutely aware of each of his vertebrae and how they’re accordion-like at the moment.

Also, if you’re in Winnipeg this weekend, I will be too! I’m appearing at C4 – Central Canada Comic Con in Winnipeg from October 31st to November 2nd.

Japanese wrestling is fascinating. There are human beings who make a living by allowing other human beings to lift them up into the air and then slam them down on their heads. A bunch of other human beings pay money to sit in a seat that has a good view of said head-dropping.

Actually screw Japanese wrestling, HUMANS are fascinating. And fucking weird.

Also, everyone should thank/eulogize Tomoaki Honma, who provided the photo reference for Richard the Lionheart landing on his neck. The photo didn’t have any information about when it was taken, but I’m guessing it was at least two years ago, as Seiya Sanada was suplexing Honma in an All Japan ring. That wasn’t information you needed to know, but it was information you deserved to know. What does that even mean? I don’t really know. At this point I’m writing some serious stream-0f-consciousness shit in this newspost.
