I missed yesterday’s update because I forgot what day it was. I’m on vacation in Ontario after having done the London Comic Con, and spent most of the day driving around the Niagara region looking to War of 1812 historical sites.

This page was re-lettered twice. Once to make the the first balloon in panel one into two balloons, and then again to change it back because that ended up looking really bad. Somehow THAT was the problem, not having to draw a zillion floating bubbles in the background.

The last panel in this one is the closest I get to the John K./Ren & Stimpy “zoom in way too close” shots. I don’t know why, but I’ve been thinking about those a lot lately. The important things a cartoonist thinks about, y’know?

I’m finishing up Hockeypocalypse 2 this week, which is fun. I’ve already released 2 trade paperbacks in the last six months, so I might as well add a third, right? I’m shooting it for it to be available on January 14th at Happy Harbor Comics, but I’ll keep you updated.

Next: The Christmas Special, and then the story continues on January 5th, 2015! The Christmas Special won’t be up early on Patreon, because, y’know, it’s a date specific strip, but I’ll put some Hockeypocalypse stuff up there, and maybe some HEAT concept art for the next story arc.

I think I drew five more HEAT pages after the buffer ran out last time, which will take us past Christmas. I forgot I still need to draw the Christmas special, so I’ll probably get to that some time this week. In the meantime, I’ve been finishing up the stuff that will go into the Hockeypocalypse Season 2 trade paperback. I’m pretty excited to get to writing next year’s HEAT stuff, though. I think there’s going to be a lot of fun, kinda different stuff.

And thus concludes the match, and Smashmouth Smith’s championship reign. The king is dead, long live the king!

I really need to get drawing, as I’ve only got one week left on the buffer. Well, more accurately I need to get drawing HEAT, I’ve been drawing quite a bit. Since the last HEAT strip, I’ve drawn 21 pages (and counting) of Hockeypocalypse 6, which is the third issue that will be included in the forthcoming Hockeypocalypse Season 2 book. It will also be available digitally as a single issue via comiXology. A lot of you have been buying Hockeypocalypse that way, which is awesome. For those of you who like print collections, it’ll be out early next year. Possibly as early as January, but definitely in time for convention season resuming for me in April. Convention season might be incredibly busy, but more on that later.

When I started drawing HEAT, clotheslines were one of the moves that I found very difficult to draw. It always looked really clunky and stiff. Not the wrestling kind of stiff, just kind of bad. And then I was sent some Japanese wrestling magazines by a reader (thanks, Ted!) and had absurd amounts of reference material for dudes smashing their biceps into somebody’s face. And dropping each other on their heads. Now when I draw a clothesline I rarely need to worry about how to compose the shot to ensure it looks like it hurts, because I have about 200 photos of actual Japanese guys wrecking each other’s faces.

In other news, buy and RATE Hockeypocalypse on comiXology. Because the more money I make from comics, the more comics I draw. Speaking of which, I’m over halfway done two separate books right now, and that’s ignoring the Hockeypocalypse trade paperback that’s going to the printers right now.

Guess who got busy with work and forgot what day it was yesterday? Hint: me.

Wolfric Farnsworth makes his second appearance, having previously been in one strip to set up a phone call bit. My writing is very deep, y’see. We’ll see a bit more of him shortly, then he’ll go away for a while. So he’s basically every other side character in the series. He’s also the same species of alien as Wildman Harris, of being terrible in the Super Max Challenge non-fame. I think this is the first time we’ve seen two aliens of the same species. Also, we get the answer to a question a fan asked me on Twitter. Or in the comments. I can’t remember. Where am I?

HEAT #74 – What Locker Rooms Are Like in the Big Leagues

BREAKING NEWS! I fucking suck at updating lately. Which is ridiculous, because this page has been finished for nearly a month now. How hard is it to remember that it’s Wednesday?

That aside, this page is a bit of a nod to the countless stories about the shenanigans that go on in wrestling locker rooms, although I suspect that naked title belt theft resulting in running face-first into a wall isn’t the most common occurrence.

This is also the first appearance of the Galactic Wrestling Television Champion, Smashmouth Smith. Who at this point isn’t especially important, but will get a bigger role later on. He was first mentioned as Jebediah Mudd’s nemesis in this installment of Bodyslam Magazine.

On Saturday: Gorilla Position isn’t as sexual as it sounds. Or is it? And hopefully I remember to update on the right goddamn day.

HEAT #73 – Hallway Streaking

This one demonstrates the science of turning a plot-mover into an inebriated (or just stupid, who knows) naked guy smashing his face into the wall while wearing nothing but the Television Title belt.

This one also demonstrates that I’m an idiot, because all day today I thought it was Sunday, and thus didn’t update the comic. And now it technically is Sunday. On the plus side, I’m about ten minutes way from finishing HEAT #82. It doesn’t feature any naked morons. I know, I know, sad.

Earlier tonight, because I thought it was Sunday and didn’t need to update the comic, I made my debut over at Pro Wrestling Ponderings. In my first cartoon, I ruminate on just how little sense the Undertaker’s gimmick makes. Even by wrestling standards. Drawing it taught me that I’m apparently pretty decent at likenesses, despite not really practicing it at all. I did a pretty sweet portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm of Germany once, though. Which has NOTHING to do with this comic at all.

On Wednesday: The rightful champ gets his belt back. Everybody else kind of wishes it stayed where it was.
