And that’s a wrap! The last HEAT page. It’s always bittersweet to come to the end of a comic, especially one that lasts as long as HEAT did. One the one hand, there’s a great sense of accomplishment; on the other, something that’s been a big part of your life is finished.

So let’s talk about what’s next – I’m going to be doing a new webcomic, which a handful of you might remember as a thing I did a couple issues of in print many years ago. It’s called HELL, INC., and is an office comedy set in hell. For more on that, hit up my various social media accounts, or keep an eye on the blog section of this site.

HEAT #465 – Trails’ End part 7

The hardest part about this short story was making the background of Doc’s rivalry with Dusty more-or-less clear to the reader without actually explaining the details or relying on them having read HEAT beforehand. It was originally published in the Kayfabe anthology. I think I talked about that earlier, but if I haven’t, uh, this originally appeared in the Kayfabe anthology. Anyway, because it was in an anthology, I knew most of the people who read it wouldn’t have known about the comic beforehand, so I needed to try to convey the plot point of the Doc/Dusty enmity without just flat out saying “these guys used to be rivals and this screwjob reference happened at this old show and then Doc trained Dick and now stuff is happening.” How successful was that? Well, you guys probably aren’t people to be asking, since you’ve presumably been reading this comic for a while.

I’m going to be in Calgary this weekend for the Calgary Expo Holiday Market (Nov 25-26). If you’re in town, check it out.

I think this page was in my portfolio for a while. It’s also one of many pages that can be pointed to as an illustration of my belief that the correct amount of blood is “a lot.”

So I just joined the new Mastodon thing. I don’t really get it yet, but I’m @HEATcomic@Mastodon.social if you want to follow me. I like that the people running it aren’t probably Nazi sympathizers (looking at you with that one, Twitter).

I’m also edging closer to being able to announce the new webcomic I’ll be starting next year, as I’m edging closer to actually figuring out what the hell I’m doing.

And in a final bit of news, thanks to everyone who backed the Where Is Zog? Kickstarter campaign! It was a rousing success, and I’m looking forward to sending the books off to the printer tomorrow.

One of my favourite sells in wrestling is a limb giving out while attempting a move. It was what I talked about when I wrote about Michael Elgin vs Tetsuya Naito from last year’s G1 Climax. I fucking love that match.

The reflection in blood effect… that didn’t really pan out the way I imagined it. Also, this update is late because I’m measuring time by the Where is Zog? Kickstarter and I forgot what day of the week it was.

I must have been looking at Kenneth Rocafort pages around the time I drew this. That’s probably where I got inspiration for the shard effects on the bottom half of the page from. He’s all about those shard effects. He’s an artist who’s worth checking out if you haven’t, he’s got a really unique style and the daily sketches he posts online are incredible.

In other news, the Where Is Zog? Kickstarter campaign is nearing the final week! It’s juuuuust about funded, so check it out and maybe you can be the one who pushes it over the top!

An alternate title for this page could be “I spent an inordinate amount of time drawing circles in the first panel.”

I have returned to Alberta after a 10 day journey to Ontario, where I tabled at London Comic Con and attended the Mississauga Comic Expo. I got to see a few Smash Wrestling mini-shows at LCC, which were a lot of fun. I also got a meet a whole bunch of new readers, which is always a pleasure. I spent most of MCX catching up with Toronto-based comics friends, but there might be some developments coming out of those conventions with regards to new projects from me.

I missed yesterday’s update because I forgot what day it was. I’m on vacation in Ontario after having done the London Comic Con, and spent most of the day driving around the Niagara region looking to War of 1812 historical sites.

This page was re-lettered twice. Once to make the the first balloon in panel one into two balloons, and then again to change it back because that ended up looking really bad. Somehow THAT was the problem, not having to draw a zillion floating bubbles in the background.

HEAT #459 – Trails’ End part 1

This is the home stretch! The last 8 pages of HEAT, which were originally published in the Kayfabe anthology. I knew early on in the Galactic Wrestling arc that this was going to be the end of the series, and drew it as a short story so that I could put it at the end of the comic whenever it eventually ended. I never expected to draw everything in between the prison arc and 3043, so having a time jump before the last story made it easier to make sure it at least kind of worked with whatever came before it.
