HEAT #172 – Sore Winner

There was a lot of thinking involved in figuring out how to approach the tag team titles in this match, with a few different directions being considered. One discarded scenario was that Doc would somehow convince/provoke LGN or their warden into putting up the tag team titles in this match, but the payoff of that situation didn’t really work in the long term projection of where the comic is going. After talking it over and bouncing ideas off of Dan Schneider (artist for the back-up story in HEAT Volume 1, available now) we came up with what you just read, which plants some seeds for later on while providing a reminder that the tag team titles A) exist and B) are desireable. So the opposite of how WWE treats their tag team titles, basically. You’ll have to keep reading to find out what exactly this altercation might lead to, though.

HEAT #158 – The Rematch

This is, in fact, the first straight-up rematch in the comic. “But Jeff,” you’re totally not saying “the first two matches were Dick the Bastard versus Wooly Bully.” But, fictitious fan, you must take into consideration that the first match was actually a gauntlet featuring two other wrestlers who were destroyed so quickly I didn’t bother to name them, so the following singles match was technically not a rematch.

More entertaining than that explanation is the conversation I just had on Twitter (follow @HEATcomic!) about my desire to see a death match between a bear and forty-two midgets in which floor seats come with plastic ponchos. Because let’s face it, it would pretty much be raining midget bits by the end of that one. If Hulk Hogan steals that idea for his midget wrestling federation (that he’s promoting over TNA, which I find hilarious), I’m going to be super pissed.

On Saturday: Let’s dance. But not literally. By dance I mean fight. With the violence and punch-kicking and whatnot.

HEAT #64 – And The Winner Is…

ARGH! The time limit expires just before the referee’s three count, leaving this one a draw. It’s an element of wrestling that isn’t all that common in the modern era of corporate-controlled wrestling, although I know that Ring Of Honor has had some high-profile time limit draws in it’s time (CM Punk and Samoa Joe’s one hour World Title matches come to mind).

And with this, the conclusion of chapter 5, I’ll be taking a two week break from the comic schedule. I have a full page Rent-A-Thug spread due in two weeks for the U of A Gateway’s centenniel comics feature which I haven’t even started and also need to finish the covers for Hell, Inc. #2, as well as build up my buffer of HEAT comics a bit. In the mean time there’ll be plenty of blog content, including a few Bodyslam Magazine articles and perhaps some guest art. The next comic will be on Saturday, August 28th.

HEAT #51 – Chapter 5: Showdown

The first panel is one of those ones that I’m proud of now but probably wanted to punch my past self in the face for writing while I was drawing it, although if I recall correctly the last panel was actually a lot more difficult, despite being a much simpler shot in terms of composition and perspective and all that technical jazz.

This match is fairly long; in fact it’s the longest one I’ve written so far (I’m on page 80-something now). I’d very much like some feedback after it’s over about whether it’s too long.

Also, the new contest has yet to see a winner, so get your entries in!

HEAT: Classic Wrestling Moments #5

Oh god this page took forever to ink. And to try to figure out the perspective of the arena in the background. The second panel was easier to work out than the first in that respect. The first panel… I’m not sure why I thought that perspective was accurate; it was probably one of those “ARGH I’ve been trying to figure this out for three hours, it’s close enough” moments, but I can’t remember.

Los Gordinflones Negros’ tag team finisher, the Fatty Bomb, harkens back to the drawing in my sketchbook that became our favourite pot-bellied Luchadors. I should scan it, because it was the start of the process that eventually led to HEAT existing. That original drawing was of an unnamed wrestler whose design I ended up using as the baseline for the Fatties delivering a ridiculously over-the-top powerbomb to another unnamed wrestler.

CONTEST TIME!

Like the last contest, the winner of this one will get to have a wrestler of their creation show up later in the comic. This one will make you work a little harder, though. In each of the Classic Wrestling Moments thus far I’ve hidden a piece of real-world wrestling trivia. The first person to email jeff@rentathugcomics.com and correctly identify the hidden wrestling factoids in CWMs 2, 3, 4, and 5 (CWM 1 was the subject of the first contest) will be declared victorious! If nobody is able to identify all four, whoever gets the most will be the winner.

HEAT #43 – Dry-Cleaning Not Included

I had to look it up, but this is the first appearance of Los Gordinflones Negros. Normally I would be on top of something like that, but I’ve been drawing them for long enough that I forgot they hadn’t shown up online yet. I actually forgot a detail of their costume in this rendition of them, although you don’t know what it is (yet). The PPW Tag Team Title belts were a design that kind of just popped into my head. I’d been trying to figure out what they should look like and couldn’t come up with something that really said “tag team”, then all of a sudden I knew exactly what it should look like, resulting in those belts. I have a pencil version that I might scan later to add to the bonus art gallery, since it gives a better view of the front plate on the belt.

Dick, Doc, and Ron’s suits were kind of fun to work on. I took the basic “future suit” from the Warden and then modified them a bit to fit each of their personalities and visual styles. Dick and Ron just got different ties; Dick’s is black to match his trunks while Ron’s uses the same sparkly texture as his entrance jacket. Doc, on the other hand, I got to go a little wild with. The sequins on the back of his jacket are an homage to Bobby “The Brain” Heenan’s old jackets, then I added a little version of his logo (which is kind of a shitty logo, but meh. I can give him a better one later) and a tie based on Scott Hall’s nWo trunks; y’know, the ones that were black and had a blood design running down them. I think I might use that design on Doc’s wrestling costume later on, I like it.

On Wednesday: Doc is the kind of fan you don’t want to sit next to.
