HEAT #269 – Counter Terrorism

I just spent a solid two minutes trying to come up with a name for this strip. It was not two minutes well spent. You know what’s a better way to spend time now that you’ve read the strip? Check out the Vader vs. Misawa match I posted on the HEAT blog. It’s about 20 minutes and awesome. Vader does an actual, proper, moonsault. It’s terrifying.

As people who follow my Twitter are already aware, I’ve been watching a lot of All Japan Pro Wrestling lately, and as a result I’ve seen a shitload of back suplexes, which are for some reason called back drops. While this particular back suplex drops Smashmouth Smith mostly on his neck and shoulders, it’s not nearly as brutal looking as the shit Misawa was taking on a nightly basis. The King’s Road was lined with skulls of CTE sufferers, apparently. Oof. Still, the matches. Oh man. They’re good.

Next: Bret Hart was used for photo reference, and also I need to do another bulk scanning day. Not a fan of those days.

After Edmonton Expo on the weekend and all of the tiredness/time-sensitive issues that needed dealing with as a result, I totally forgot that new comics go up on Monday. I guess ten hours of sleep over three days will do that. Although really, that was my own stupid fault for being some sort of nocturnal raccoon-person.

Also, hockey season has started, so my Twitter is going to consist largely of rage/glee regarding the Edmonton Oilers as well as what you’ve come to expect, which is rage/glee regarding wrestling. Mostly glee, lately, as I’ve been only very casually following WWE and instead been watching a lot of ’90s AJPW. If you enjoy this comic, you probably like wrestling, and if you like wrestling, you need to hit up YouTube or RudoReels and check out some ’90s AJPW. It’s fantastic. Next up on my DVD set will be Vader defending the Triple Crown against Misawa in the Tokyo Dome in 1999. It probably won’t live up to Misawa/Kawada in the Dome from ’98, as Vader/Taue wasn’t all that good, but it should be fun nevertheless. I’m also kind of interested in the fast approaching NOAH split and how that shakes things up. Match quality will probably take a hit, but it should still be cool to see.

Oh, and if you don’t like lariats, this match (and Japan) will not be for you. Smashmouth Smith’s move set is very much built around them.

Next Week: Counters upon counters upon being an asshole.

HEAT #202 – Wanton Senton

This is the first comic of the new update schedule! Comics will now be posted on Monday nights, probably during WWE RAW, both for the novelty of posting during RAW as well as the fact that I’m typically home and on the computer while it’s on. So it’s official: HEAT updates on Mondays now.

This was the first HEAT comic I’d drawn in over a month because I was finishing the second volume of my upcoming digital series, Grunts. It’s a good thing I finished when I did, since I had exactly one page remaining in my queue at that point. The paneling in this page, particularly the black gutters, is pretty reminiscent of Grunts, as it took a bit of an adjustment period to get back to the style of HEAT. Turns out drawing fat guys falling down doesn’t require an adjustment period, though, as it’s the natural state of comedy.

Next Monday: Fat guys falling down is the comedic gift that keeps on giving. It’s a good thing Uno likes to jump off of things, or we might be denied that hilarity.

HEAT #201 – Dick the Bastard’s Spine Hates This One

So I’m thinking Saturday is a shit day to update the comic on, since recently I seem to be having issues remembering to post/being home to do so. I’m thinking about moving updates to Monday, mostly for the novelty of updating during RAW. Thoughts? You guys are the ones who read it, after all.

I wasn’t surprised that finding reference for a double axe handle or a chin lock with the knee in the back proved to be rather difficult, but the elbow drop… man, the elbow drop. I have no idea why finding a reference for a decent elbow drop that wasn’t off the top rope was so hard, but it was. If Google is to be believed, apparently the only people who have ever used an elbow drop are Shawn Michaels and Randy Savage. And nobody has ever used an elbow drop that wasn’t off the top rope. EVER. I can’t remember where I found it, but I ended up finding a cool picture of Curt Hawkins dropping an elbow on somebody I can’t remember on NXT, which according to Twitter has gotten really, really good. Then again, Twitter had a raging boner for Zack Ryder and now nobody gives a shit about his freefall back into obscurity, so take Twitter’s endorsement with a grain of salt and just see for yourself if you like it or not.

The next update will either be next Saturday or some other day if change the schedule. If I do, you shall be notified via the blog and my Twitter (found in the sidebar), so there won’t be any surprises.

Next Time: Can Dick the Bastard escape Vinny LaGrazo’s chinlock? PROBABLY. Also, other things happen.

HEAT #6 – Learnin’ Time part 2

This page was so much fun to draw. The back suplex was my favourite thing to draw, with the reverse chinlock being a close second. The wrestling pages are always a ton of fun to draw, although a lot of the time they end up being the most complicated.

I watched about half of Smackdown last night, and have come to the conclusion that the Undertaker’s “American badass” gimmick from a few years ago has gone a long way toward wrecking his classic “dead man” gimmick. Especially since he seems to be mashing them together into some sort of zombie redneck. Actually, I should keep zombie redneck in mind for later, when the HEAT roster expands.

Keep in mind that next week, updates will be on Wednesday and Saturday!
