Why do I keep thinking it’s a good idea to draw the action spilling into the crowd? It’s always an absurd amount of work. But then again, dives into the crowd are always so COOL, either in real life or illustration form.

I reeeeeally love how this page turned out. Usually when I get big ideas like the middle panel’s multi-image motion powerbomb/flying cross body combination the actual drawing of said ideas makes me hate my past self for coming up with it. This one went unusually smoothly, even the cross body landing which I have learned from experience is difficult to get right.
My friend Jay is going to be annoyed at me as a result of this page, as he was the one who won the contest way back when and created Invincinator. On the other hand, he can’t get TOO mad, since Invincinator was only supposed to show up in a brief cameo on page 37 and then ended up being present throughout the entire second book. I’m not going to miss having to draw his crazy Dragonball Z hair, though. Not at all.
On Saturday: We’re back to even strength at 3 wrestlers a piece. Who can secure the advantage? And will new spatula technology be required to peel Invincinator off of the mat?
I keep writing in flying cross bodies without remembering that they’re actually pretty difficult to draw, particularly the landing. Good job, me. Then again, I recently drew a powerbomb/cross body combination, so compared to that a normal cross body is pretty pedestrian stuff. I also really like the over-the-post isometric angle that I used in the first panel, which ECW used to use on TV in some of their venues. I’m not sure why it didn’t get used more often, as it’s a pretty unique angle compared to the standard wrestling TV shots. At some point during a FORCE Pro Wrestling production meeting I’m probably going to try to convince somebody that we should use it, if we happen to run a venue that supports it.
Speaking of live pro wrestling, if you missed it earlier this week I posted a review of PWA Fruition 2012, which was headlined by Harry Smith defending the PWA Heavyweight Championship against Chavo Guerrero Jr. You can see the match in it’s entirety right here!
On Saturday: I fought the Law, and it ended up in a shape closely resembling a pancake. Then it tried to tag out. I tried to come up with some sort of syrup joke but they all sounded dirty.
Aaand that’s why the title of the last comic made fun of Wildman Harris. Up next, Uno steps into the ring to take on Ron “The Con” Gould in another first round singles match.
If you’re in Edmonton this weekend, you should definitely come check out the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show at the Shaw Conference Centre. I’ll be there along with my homies from Open Door Comics doing sketches and selling copies of my print comics, Hell, Inc. and Hell, Inc. #2: Candied Sheep Day, which will be making it’s debut at the show. I’ll also be selling a series of wrestling-themed art cards. Since the Dudley Boyz are going to be there signing autographs, I decided to start with some Dudley-themed art cards. Yes, yes, they’re Team 3D now… well, actually they’re feuding right now, but my point is that, as far as I’m concerned, I’ll always remember them as the Dudley Boyz.
On Saturday: Uno vs. Ron “The Con” Gould begins. Also, I’ll be at the PWA 10th Anniversary Show watching Bully Ray & Dylan Knight take on Brother D-Von and Lance Storm.
Early update! Okay, only a few hours, but still.
I’m pretty happy with how this page turned out, especially the first coule of panels (which took forever to ink, but I think it was worth it). The characters’ reactions to the flying cross body block is a bit of a nod to Rob Van Dam’s Five Star Frog Splash, which he typically sold as if it hurt him just as much as the other guy. He probably still does, but I haven’t seen anything he’s done since he was in the WWE. Apparently he’s wrestling Jerry Lynn at the next TNA PPV, which is… well, 10-12 years after their epic wars over the ECW Television Title, which I guess is keeping with TNA’s theme of trying to recreate the late ’90s.
