Writing commentary has to be one of my favourite parts of the writing process, entirely because of weird bits of dialogue like this page’s exchange between The Blorg and John Bradley. Because why would a creature without a spine know about the importance of spines to vertebrate creatures during a wrestling match?Other than being a former professional wrestler. Seems like somebody would have mentioned to him along the way in his career that the back is a good place to injure on a vertebrate. I’m thinking that perhaps The Blorg wasn’t all that good of a wrestler.

Uno’s low dropkick in the last panel might be the best dropkick I’ve drawn in the entire series so far, and I didn’t even use reference for it. I think learning may have occurred at some point in the process of drawing this series! Snapmares are also much easier to draw when the characters involved are kind of the same size.

Also, RAW 1000. Holy shit it’s good so far. As I’m posting this, the wedding of AJ and Daniel Bryan is underway. To someone not watching WWE, that sentence probably seemed really bizarre.

Next Week: Dick the Bastard does something he CAN do, but SHOULDN’T do, according to the referee. He argues this point.

HEAT #189 – Picking On The Little Guy

Today’s update is early because I’m going to PWA: Fruition tonight, so I’ll be too busy watching Harry (David Hart) Smith defend the PWA Heavyweight Title against Chavo Guerrero Jr to update later on. Look for the show review on that one in the next few days.

It’s surprisingly difficult to find reference material for a guy getting clotheslined in the corner, which seems very strange to me since it happens in pretty much every match featuring a guy over 250 pounds, and it’s not exactly infrequent amongst smaller guys either. It’s also difficult to draw one of the most cut guys in the match as smaller than other people, even though he is. Apparently watching WWE for years has led me to consider muscle mass and muscle definition as the same thing.

In non-HEAT-related news, I recently watched what may very well by my new favourite tag team match of all time, which I recommend you check out: it’s Ricky Marvin and Kotaro Suzuki defending the GHC Jr. Heavyweight Tag Team Championship against the Briscoe Brothers from ROH Invades Japan Volume 1 (available from Rudo Reels, who are a great source of affordable wrestling!) They also have quite a few contests on Twitter for free stuff, so check ’em out.

Next Saturday: Johnny Law picks on somebody his own size. Sort of.

HEAT #24 – Almost A Comeback

I haven’t used the commentary captions in the comic since the last match, which was like a month ago, so just a reminder that the “H” is for play-by-play man Hugh Jameson and the “J” is for colour guy John Bradley.

Up until page 37, which I completed recently, this page had the dubious distinction of being the one that I pointed at and said “I really shouldn’t have tried to fit that much on this page”. The way I had pictured the Sunset Flip in my head, it would have been three vertical panels with Bully spanning all three of them and Dick in different stages of the move in each (starting the flip, passing over Bully, and then on the mat trying to pull him over). I still might use that at some point in the future, maybe if I use a Sunset Flip powerbomb at some point. For the purposes of this page, though, it just took up too much room, since the most important thing that needed to happen was the Bully setting up the China Shop. I think the multi-image motion Sunset Flip worked out just as well, in the end.

I also started rendering the transparent cube thing surrounding the ring a little differently. And the match I’m working on now has it rendered differently than this page. I figure I’ll nail down how to render the dome background shortly before I no longer need to be able to draw it.

HEAT #13 – The China Shop

The Wooly Bully’s finishing move, The China Shop, was the first finisher I came up with for HEAT that wasn’t already an actual move used by a real wrestler (at least as far as I know). It seems like most big guys use the exact same move set (with the chokeslam being a popular finish), and I wanted to make the Bully a bit more interesting. For some reason I thought of that thing Mr. Perfect used to do, where he would snap mare a guy then flip over him with a neck snap. Using that as a base, I thought about how a giant could use something similar, and decided that instead of the fancy flipping neck snap, he should just flop on the guy. So that’s what the Bully does. Although the “flop” is more of an Ultimate Muscle-style impossibly huge leap, because that’s just more fun. There’s actually a lot of influence from Ultimate Muscle in HEAT.

For those not familiar with Ultimate Muscle, it’s a Japanese manga and anime series that follows the adventures of Kid Muscle and the Muscle League (primarily represented by Terry Kenyon, Dik Dik Van Dik, and Wally Tusket) as they battle evil superhuman wrestlers (the dMp, whose logo is pretty much identical to the black and white nWo logo). It had a weird combination of extreme brutality and slapstick and bathroom humour.
