HEAT #252 – Space Fud

I have no idea if the fake-Japanese symbol I came up with for “fud” actually means anything, but I’m sure I’ll get angry and/or confused emails if it does. My favourite part of this page, though, was getting to draw Mad Doc Crockett as Dr. Pain. Doc’s finisher is the Cobra Clutch, but I like to show him beating people with a variety of submission holds. I like it when wrestlers don’t always win with their finisher, because it  makes other moves seem a lot more dangerous. In this case, Doc Crockett is busting out the horse collar stretch, which I think is an underutilized move, because it’s super simple but it looks REALLY painful.

Also, my War of 1812 comic reached the end of Chapter 1 last week. Go read it and give my publisher excuses to give me more money.

Next Week: Back to the present! Which, for us, is the future. So… I’m confused now. Just come back next week to read more.

This one’s title sounds like it’s from a sci-fi anthology book. Also, I was doing really good remembering that Mondays exist until yesterday. Stupid Monday.

I really dig the Japanese streamer-throwing during wrestler introductions, but it turns out it’s as much of a pain to draw as it is to clean up.

HEAT #152 – Meanwhile, Violence

I have watched a whooole lotta live wrestling in since the last update, readers. On Saturday I was in Morinville with FORCE Pro Wrestling’s inaugural card, which turned out very well, then on Monday I was in attendance for WWE RAW in Edmonton. CM Punk and John Cena main eventing RAW may have been great on TV, but live it was fucking mind-blowing. I can only imagine what it would have been like to be in the crowd for their matches at Money In The Bank or SummerSlam. I was also surprised how poorly the crowd noise translated from the arena to television.

Simple moves that are difficult to draw part ten thousand: suplexes. The landing was a lot more difficult than the lifting part. But we’re finally back to the second round of the Super Max Challenge, in which Vinny LaGrazo and Rod Black are taking on Wildman Harris and “Pretty Boy” Paul Meyers.

On Saturday: Rod Black tags in and attempts to put the “Pretty Boy” away.

Now, onto the commentary for this episode. After drawing Bors Lund in my sketchbook I wanted to come up with something to do with him, which you’re reading the result of right now. It didn’t seem like there was nearly so much dialogue on this page until I actually had to fit it all into the layout, which I then had to try and keep visually interesting. Which nearly resulted in an aneurysm. And naturally, on a page packed with dialogue, my two favourite bits are visuals (the men’s room door sign and “anachronism!” light bulb).

We’re also ONE WEEK away from FORCE Pro Wrestling’s debut show in Morinville, Alberta. I’ll be there doing… whatever it is I’ll end up doing. Come say hi and pick up a HEAT book, which will be on sale at the merch table.

On Wednesday: HEAT 150! And Dick the Bastard is disappointed by Bors Lund’s lack of lizardy accent.
