HEAT #153 – Flying Knee Injury

The script for this page could pretty much be summarized as “Rod Black misses a knee drop.” So basically that one sentence took about six hours to draw and ink. That’s what happens when you get into comics, kids; you spend hours and hours creating pages that take less than a minute to read. At least it’s not as bad as being a CG animator, where it takes two weeks to do a shot that lasts a second. I thought I’d have more to talk about for this page, since I had a lot of fun working on it, but apparently fun doesn’t always translate into interesting anecdotes.

HEAT #152 – Meanwhile, Violence

I have watched a whooole lotta live wrestling in since the last update, readers. On Saturday I was in Morinville with FORCE Pro Wrestling’s inaugural card, which turned out very well, then on Monday I was in attendance for WWE RAW in Edmonton. CM Punk and John Cena main eventing RAW may have been great on TV, but live it was fucking mind-blowing. I can only imagine what it would have been like to be in the crowd for their matches at Money In The Bank or SummerSlam. I was also surprised how poorly the crowd noise translated from the arena to television.

Simple moves that are difficult to draw part ten thousand: suplexes. The landing was a lot more difficult than the lifting part. But we’re finally back to the second round of the Super Max Challenge, in which Vinny LaGrazo and Rod Black are taking on Wildman Harris and “Pretty Boy” Paul Meyers.

On Saturday: Rod Black tags in and attempts to put the “Pretty Boy” away.

And with this strip, Chapter 8 is FINALLY finished. As opposed to the first year, which had 7 chapters, this year’s probably only going to have 3 really long ones. Like how Chapter 8 just ran, what, 37 pages? And naturally, it ends with Mad Doc Crockett looking fucking insane.

Weird fact: drawing a pin with the leg hooked is one of the hardest types of pin to draw. I’m sure if I thought about it I could nail down a competent artistic explanation for that, but I don’t really want to think that hard, so I’ll just leave it at “it’s hard to draw a pin with the leg hooked.” The O’Connor roll from the last match was actually a lot easier to draw, believe it or not. Also, the gaps between appearances of the ring announcer are just long enough that I never remember how to draw her.

The update that would be scheduled for Saturday, June 18th is going to be pushed to the following Wednesday due to the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, where I’m probably not going to have reliable internet access to post it.

On Saturday: Classic Wrestling Moment #9, featuring Mad Doc Crockett and Bors Lund in Galactic Wrestling.

HEAT #129 – Gouged Eye of the Law

You may have noticed the pattern of terrible plays on phrases involving “Law” in the titles recently. You should be used to cringe-worthy titles by now, though. If it wasn’t already pretty clear that Johnny Law is… let’s say an “homage”… to the Big Bossman, there should be no question about it now. Incidentally, the Bossman Slam is a really difficult move to figure out how to stage, especially since it typically involves a 90-ish degree swing.

HEAT #128 – I Continued to Fight the Law and it Punched Me Really Hard

While the spots in this match are a lot simpler than the ones in the Rod Black/El Gangster II match, they presented similar problems in terms of how to pace things out. Whereas the problems in the last match stemmed from the constant motion and the wrestlers frequently ending up fairly far apart at the end of a move, this match gave me issues because it’s pretty scrambly in a lot of places, like on this page. The script also called for Meyers’ roll-up attempt to look like “a sloppy version of a Magistral cradle,” which proved to be really difficult to figure out how to stage, or even what that would look like. I ended up going with whatever it is I drew. I think I’ve seen it used before, but I don’t know what it’s called.

In other news, HEAT: The Space Age of Pro Wrestling Volume 1 is now finished. Should be off to the printers Friday or Monday.

On Saturday: Being hugged like a bear is only slightly less desireable than being hugged by a bear.

HEAT #127 – BOOT!

Much like every other time a small guy mugs a big guy in a wrestling match, Paul Meyers gets kicked in the face for his trouble. Drawing this match was almost the complete opposite of drawing Rod Black vs. El Gangster II, which featured a lot of lucha libre-style moves that were all about motion and flow. This one is much more of a WWF big-man match from, like, 1990. One thing I didn’t really anticipate when I started HEAT was how different the approach to each match would end up being. Writing a fast-paced lucha-style match with a lot of high-flying spots is A LOT different than writing a match with two guys who want to establish significantly different paces.

Johnny Law seems to be kind of popular amongst you guys, which I’m a little surprised by, since he’s essentially an in-shape Big Bossman. Maybe that’s why? Either way, he’ll be around for the majority of the Super Max story.

On Wednesday: Johnny Law looks to polish off Paul Meyers, but he’s more resistant to polishing than one might expect. If that sentence made any sense to you, you get an internet high-five.

HEAT #126 – I Fought The Law, And Punched It In The Head

And we’re back with the final match-up in the first round of the Super Max Challenge! I’d wanted to wait until after this match to go on break, but the timing of the HEAT book’s schedule required me to move the break up to get things finished. I’m behind where I’d like to be, but the book is done except for a few pages and will be out in time for the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo, so close enough.

Paul Meyers is an attempt to draw a more lean style of physique. I’m not entirely sure how successful I was, but I did accomplish my side goal, which was to learn whether I could draw somebody wearing sparkly trunks for an entire match and not want to kill somebody. To my surprise, the answer was yes, I could draw sparkly trunks for an entire match and not want to kill somebody.

I think Johnny Law’s entrance may be the first time I’ve done a crowd reaction for anything in, like, 80 pages. Sometimes I think about doing it, then forget until I’ve already drawn the panel and don’t have room for the crowd reaction.

On Saturday: Can Johnny Law turn the momentum, or will being a big lumbering ox be a hinderance?

Bodyslam Magazine: PPW Top 10 Rankings

With the Super Max Challenge Cup looming, it’s time to check in on Prison Pro Wrestling’s top 10 rankings. The qualifying round’s opening contest recently took place on Prison Asteroid 32J, with 32J and 17E both earning a point as Dick the Bastard and Ron “The Con” Gould took Los Gordinflones Negros, the PPW Tag Team Champions, to a time limit draw. But you’re here for the rankings, so let’s get to it.

10. The Wooly Bully
The native of The Shear Peaks has taken quite a tumble in the rankings after a pair of losses to newcomer Dick the Bastard. Previously thought to be a sure bet to challenge for Johnny Law’s Asteroid Belt in the near future, the Bully is going to need to live up to his name if he’s going to get back into the title hunt.

9. “Pretty Boy” Paul Meyers
The self-proclaimed “Pretty Boy” has built up quite a bit of momentum for himself heading into the Super Max Challenge. While his current winning streak is rather modest by wrestling win-streak standards, he’s shown a lot of improvement inside the ring and could be a dark horse pick to excel in the Super Max Challenge qualifying round.

8. Dick the Bastard
While still a rookie in PPW, back-to-back wins over the hairy juggernaut known as the Wooly Bully grabbed a lot of attention. Momentum kept going with a draw against the Tag Team Champions, and rumours are flying that he’s on the short list of call-ups to fill out the 30 participants in Galactic Wrestling’s upcoming Gauntlet battle royal.

7. Ron “The Con” Gould
Despite a recent string of losses with partner Tim Van Patten, Ron Gould’s record and recent partnership with Dick the Bastard (and subsequent near-win over the Tag Team Champions) left our panel of experts comfortable placing him in the number 7 slot. Gould’s tag team wrestling experience should be a valuable asset in the Super Max Challenge.

6. Jack Allen
Jack Allen has been on fire since being traded to Prison Asteroid 32J (who, quite frankly, won the shit out of that trade) for Billy Duggan. Allen’s Tiger Suplex has become one of the most effective finishers in PPW, as not a single wrestler has been able to kick out of it. Teaming with Invincinator hasn’t hurt his record, either.

5. Los Gordinflones Negros
Uno and Dos, Los Gordinflones Negros, have compiled an excellent record on their journey to the PPW Tag Team titles, and have yet to lose a match since winning the belts. The only factor preventing them from ranking higher is their lack of exposure in singles competition. Neither member of LGN has wrestled more than a handful of matches solo.

4. Invincinator
Invincinator is an oddity on this list, as he’s the only one who isn’t actually in prison. The prison league is a step up from the competition on his home planet, though, and he’s making the best of his new surroundings by compiling an impressive record since his arrival in PPW. Some insiders have suggested that he’s a top contender to make Prison Asteroid 32J’s Super Max Challenge Cup team if they’re able to qualify.

3. El Gangster II
The younger brother of PPW legend – and current HEAT star, after a lengthy stay in Lucha Libre del Muerte – El Gangster. El Gangster II is likely in line for a championship match within the next year or so, although most experts are of the opinion that he’ll be signed by another promotion before that happens. Unsurprisingly, rumours have Lucha Libre del Muerte showing interest.

2. Vinny LaGrazo
As miserable a bastard as we’ve ever seen step through the ropes, Vinny LaGrazo has recently been announced as the number one contender for the PPW Asteroid Belt, although it is unlikely that a match will be arranged for several months due to the Super Max Challenge. Vinny’s climb up the ranks has left a slough of beaten opponents in his wake, most of them bent into shapes not unlike pretzels.

1. Johnny Law
The copper would be PPW’s most hated wrestler even if he wasn’t wearing the Asteroid Belt around his waist. Even the toughest opponents seem to wilt when they step into the squared circle with Johnny Law, and it doesn’t seem like anybody else will be claiming PPW’s top singles prize anytime soon.
