HEAT #260 – Heroism

So this particular character was a result of a fairly common occurrence, which is local artists drawing something goofy and telling me I should make it a wrestler in HEAT. Sometimes I do! This clam-headed fellow is Muscle Mussel, courtesy Sue Withers. It’s hard to see in the shrunken down version for the site, but he’s got a tiny version of his head on the front right hip of his trunks.
Also, guess who forgot it was Monday on Monday because he didn’t watch RAW? Hint: me. It doesn’t help that I’m in the final push to finish a new book, and have been going hard to get that done super early.

Next Week: Even more heroism from “the Lionheart.” That was sarcasm.

HEAT #195 – Dead Mascots Society

At no point in working on HEAT, until about five seconds ago, did I ever think I would have a Dead Poets Society joke in the comic in any context. Mostly because I typically forget that movie exists until it gets brought up in classes.

I use a lot of photo reference to help me draw the moves, and sometimes finding the right reference for what I’m trying to draw is a huge pain in the ass. For example, any time I want reference for somebody standing on the top rope, I pretty much have to try to take those photos myself at live shows, because finding them online is more hassle than it’s worth. Back suplexes, on the other hand, take roughly ten seconds looking at a Japanese wrestling magazine to find references from 17 different angles. I’m pretty sure it would take less effort to find a picture of a back suplex where somebody was on fire in a Japanese wrestling mag than it took me to find reference for the Bossman Slam on WWE.com. And that’s keeping in mind that Wade Barrett’s new finisher is the Bossman Slam. Madness.

HEAT #192 – The Switch

Early update today, as I’m headed off to Real Canadian Wrestling’s Goldrush event tonight at the Glengarry Community Hall in Edmonton.

I’ve always been a fan of tag teams using the “twin” switch as a heel tactic, which was part of the reason why Los Gordinflones Negros were designed to look alike, the other reason being that I also really like teams where the members’ names are numbers, which requires that the members look alike to make any sense. There’s also a bit of a nod to the absurdity of the referee never noticing that “twins” frequently have their name written on their gear, or some other really obvious identifying feature. I didn’t want to go as far on the crazy scale as what I saw the WWF do with Demolition, on occasion, where after adding Crush to the team they would swap out members in the middle of match despite all three guys looking completely different.

On Saturday: Can Invincinator battle back from Los Gordinflones Negros’ switch, or will be be splatterfied by the Fatties?

Finally, Sharkenstein HAS COME BACK… to Classic Wrestling Moments. And is apparently encouraging me to rip off The Rock, who made his return on an entirely-too-long episode of RAW on Monday. It’s been so long since I’ve drawn Sharkenstein that I entirely forgot how to do it, which made my first few cracks at him on this page… interesting. Gonna go with interesting.

HEAT #140 – The Fattest Train in the Galaxy

This page layout seemed like genius until I realized just how much harder it was to draw full-scale than it was to draw in the thumbnail. The top half was easy enough, since I’ve drawn dozens of pages with two rows of panels stacked on top of each other, but trying to keep everything in scale on the bottom half was really tough, to the point that the bottom half took almost twice as long to draw as the top.

The Blorg and John Bradley’s vaguely combative relationship is a lot of fun to write, which isn’t something I would have expected considering how much I loathe Michael Cole ruining matches on WWE television by shitting on whatever the other commentators are saying. I think it might be because of the change in medium.

In other news, I drew HEAT 150 last night. Hurrah!

On Saturday: The debate about whether or not “being short” is an offensive move begins!

HEAT #122 – Out Drinking With Gorilla Typhoon

Doc’s line about Gorilla Typhoon is a reference back to the match with Los Gordinflones Negros where he distracted the referee with “a long insane story about a moose.” Art-wise, this was easily the simplest page of this match.

After April 30th I’ll be taking a couple of weeks off from posting new comics, mostly because I want to finish up the HEAT Volume 1 trade paperback collection so I can have it printed in time for the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo. It’s going to be pretty hefty, weighing in at 124 pages, including an all-new 14 page short story written by me and drawn by Dan Schneider. There’s a lot of layout stuff that still needs to be done, including the commentary by Dick the Bastard and Mad Doc Crockett. 100 pages of it. Eep. I wanted to hold off until the end of the current chapter to take a break, but adding that extra two weeks onto it cuts the printing deadlines pretty close.

On Saturday: Like Scott Steiner but without the steroid abuse and stupid chainmail hat.

HEAT #108 – Super Heavyweight

The super heavyweight gimmick that the Holly cousins rocked for a while in 1999/2000 was an integral part of the original description for Invincinator’s personality. So integral that it was really the only part. It was pretty much “Remember Crash Holly’s super heavyweight gimmick? Yeah, that.” Once I read the initial descriptiton for him I knew he’d need to get a promo at some point, although at the time I didn’t think it would take until page 108 to get there. I can’t remember at what point I decided he should wrestle a gigantic fat guy named — ever so creatively, I might add — Dr. Fat, but I think it was the right decision, especially since I got to a draw a Pillsbury Doughboy-esque belly poking.

Also, in case you haven’t checked it out yet, the Super Max Challenge rules are posted in the About drop-down in the menu bar. I’m thinking about putting up a scoreboard in the sidebar, too.

On Saturday: Invincinator attempts to do some invincing. Or something.
