The Rey Mysterio t-shirt in the second panel has one of my favourite jokes that is way too small to be able to read on the screen. It’s a Rey Mysterio mask with 619 above it and blood leaking out of it. On the blood it says “… surgeries on my left knee.” Incidentally, I think Mysterio’s surgery quote might be the most mocked element of those WWE “don’t try this at home” videos EVER. Especially if you count my Twitter feed as a large enough sample size to determine things like that.

Also, this is the first appearance of Mad Doc Crockett in volume 3! I told you he wouldn’t be going away. He’s just in kind of a different role for a while. Don’t worry, that role still means he gets all the best jokes when he’s around.

Next Week: Classic Wrestling Moments 12, in which we learn more about the sad story of Wolfric Farnsworth. And that Dusty Trails is a prick.

Striking is something that always comes off kind of weird to me in wrestling. Punching is, based on the rules of wrestling, an illegal move. And yet in the course of an episode of Monday Night RAW, you will see roughly 246 punches. And they will all be sold like the guy getting punched is one more shot away from getting knocked out cold. And nobody will ever be in jeopardy of being pinned after taking both of somebody’s boots in the mush.

Meanwhile, in the world of comics, Dick the Bastard regularly wins matches by headbutting people. Granted, it’s with a viking helmet, but still.

HEAT #240 – Caroline’s Dating Policy

The stage direction for Caroline in the first panel was that she shoved Dick “like Elaine from Seinfeld.” Elaine’s weird enraged shove while yelling “GET OUT” when hearing good news might be one of the most iconic mannerisms in my television-watching childhood. The phrase “old balls” has nothing to do with my television watching childhood, but was instead a phrase one of my twenty-something friends used to refer to her slightly older twenty-something friends.

Incidentally, Dick’s t-shirt design exists because when I was drawing this page, Brock Lesnar was either in the middle of or had just ended one of his sporadic WWE runs. I can’t remember now. I write the start and end dates of each page on the actual piece of paper, but it’s like twelve feet away, so nuts to that.

Next Week: Caroline shares many traits with Elaine from Seinfeld. Okay, just one, but she has many levels of it.

HEAT #239 – Like Twenty Questions But Stupid

Internet, I am very tired. I’m also very glad that while I had time and significantly lower stress levels, I drew a lot of HEAT pages. After I finish posting this I’ll be starting on HEAT 252, which will be the first HEAT page I’ve worked on in about three weeks. I’m also watching the replay of Old School RAW right now, and becoming very acutely aware of how much the RAW themes have dropped in quality over the years.

Also, I’m glad I kind of learned how to draw girls, or this chapter would have been a disaster. Seriously, I’ve been drawing drawing comics on the interwebs for just shy of 7 years now and I just learned how to draw not-completely-terrible women in the last, like, six months.

I’ve had some Twitter conversations about the comic with fans lately, which I encourage. It’s always fun talking to people who read this thing, it’s a nice reminder that I’m not just doing it for my own entertainment.

Guess who was watching a decent hockey game with a disappointing conclusion and forgot that he hadn’t put up the comic yet? Hint: Me.

Buster Pallas is a guy we’re going to be seeing quite a bit of for the foreseeable future. Mad Doc Crockett fans needn’t worry, however, we’ll be seeing him again soon.

The caption in panel one wasn’t intended to be the title for this page, but I write the titles as I’m posting the comic, so sometimes I just use a line that jumps out at me. “Well that’s convenient” was a close runner-up.

Wolfric Farnsworth is what I imagine Damien Sandow would look like if he was a dog monster from outer space.

HEAT #235 – Making Cardio Fun

I was going to make a point of talking about how I’ve improved a lot at drawing women, but then I realized most of you haven’t seen the Classic Wrestling Moment I drew for my portfolio so that I would have some substantial drawings of women to show off. So first, go look at this page: Classic Wrestling Moment X. Done? Cool. So you may have noticed that I got A LOT better at drawing women between then and now. Caroline’s character was developed pretty much entirely to give me a reason to draw a female character a lot. It occurred to me later that having the first major female character in the comic be kind of a shitty person is kind of… well, shitty. This page doesn’t involve her being shitty, by the way, that’ll come a bit later.

In other news, I was on a podcast! Initially I had been invited to be on the Chan & Dan comics podcast to talk about making money drawing comics, but then Dan (who drew the back-up story in HEAT Volume 1) and I got absolutely shit-blasted playing the Royal Rumble drinking game. Steph (the Chan of Chan & Dan) very graciously drove us home, but since the podcast recording about intelligent topics wasn’t going to happen, she just recorded our drunken ravings during the car ride. So go listen to that.

Next Week: Wolfric Farnsworth makes an appearance, and we journey to the riveting world of business phone calls. In spaaaaaace.

And we’re underway with HEAT Volume 3! We’ve jumped about six months forward in time, but I’ll be filling in some of that time over the coming months. What I can fill in now is that Evseedub is all about hexagonal elements in architecture, and that apparently energy beings have the ability to function as ring announcers.

I went to a Royal Rumble party last night. The drinking game happened. So… yeah. I know Rock won the WWE Title, and I watched it happen, but I had no idea what actually happened until I read a show recap on the Torch this morning. Also, fuck you, Dolph Ziggler. What are you doing that’s making the WWE start-stop your pushes, and why did you have to go out so quickly after Antonio Cesaro? I HAD TO DOWN TWO FULL DRINKS BECAUSE OF YOU FUCKS.
