And with this strip, Chapter 8 is FINALLY finished. As opposed to the first year, which had 7 chapters, this year’s probably only going to have 3 really long ones. Like how Chapter 8 just ran, what, 37 pages? And naturally, it ends with Mad Doc Crockett looking fucking insane.

Weird fact: drawing a pin with the leg hooked is one of the hardest types of pin to draw. I’m sure if I thought about it I could nail down a competent artistic explanation for that, but I don’t really want to think that hard, so I’ll just leave it at “it’s hard to draw a pin with the leg hooked.” The O’Connor roll from the last match was actually a lot easier to draw, believe it or not. Also, the gaps between appearances of the ring announcer are just long enough that I never remember how to draw her.

The update that would be scheduled for Saturday, June 18th is going to be pushed to the following Wednesday due to the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo, where I’m probably not going to have reliable internet access to post it.

HEAT #125 – Roll Up The Rim To Win

If you’re not Canadian, you probably didn’t just groan at the title of this strip. Believe it or not, this was the second simplest strip in the Gangster/Black match to draw, behind the page with the forearm smash and removal of the turnbuckle pad. Which wasn’t such a good idea for Rod Black, as it turns out. Who ever would have thought a plan to cheat could backfire? MADNESS!

As I mentioned a while ago, this will be the last HEAT strip for a couple of weeks as I wrap up the HEAT: Volume 1 book and a couple of other projects. Speaking of the HEAT book, that’s coming along excellently. The bulk of the book is made up of HEAT 1-93 as well as Classic Wrestling Moments 1-7, now with bonus commentary by Dick the Bastard and Mad Doc Crockett. Dan Schneider’s 14 page back-up story, which features the first Galactic Championship match between Mad Doc Crockett and Ragnar Rasmussen, is scheduled to be done by Free Comic Book Day (May 7th). Followers of my Twitter feed have already gotten a preview of the cover. At current estimate, the book should be completed around May 10th and ready for sale at the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo.

HEAT will return online in roughly 2 weeks (probably either the 14th or 18th, depending on how smoothly things go) with the final match-up in the opening round of the Super Max Challenge, Johnny Law vs. Pretty Boy Paul Meyers.

It was strangely important to me that, in the third panel, Ron’s legs look he was trying to kick out but didn’t have the strength left to do it. I can’t remember why I thought that was so important, but apparently I cared about it enough to lie on the floor next to a mirror pretending to be stunned to figure out how to draw it. Which, in retrospect, probably ended up taking less time than it would have to dig through YouTube clips of wrestling matches to find what I was looking for.

On Saturday: The day on which one is hit in the head with a wrench is, typically, not one of their better days.

Aaand that’s why the title of the last comic made fun of Wildman Harris. Up next, Uno steps into the ring to take on Ron “The Con” Gould in another first round singles match.

If you’re in Edmonton this weekend, you should definitely come check out the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show at the Shaw Conference Centre. I’ll be there along with my homies from Open Door Comics doing sketches and selling copies of my print comics, Hell, Inc. and Hell, Inc. #2: Candied Sheep Day, which will be making it’s debut at the show. I’ll also be selling a series of wrestling-themed art cards. Since the Dudley Boyz are going to be there signing autographs, I decided to start with some Dudley-themed art cards. Yes, yes, they’re Team 3D now… well, actually they’re feuding right now, but my point is that, as far as I’m concerned, I’ll always remember them as the Dudley Boyz.

On Saturday: Uno vs. Ron “The Con” Gould begins. Also, I’ll be at the PWA 10th Anniversary Show watching Bully Ray & Dylan Knight take on Brother D-Von and Lance Storm.

Dr. Fat’s powerslam didn’t turn out quite as brutal-looking as I’d hoped, and in retrospect there should have been another panel showing Invincinator being pancaked into the mat. Although if he was pancaked, Dr. Fat may have tried to eat him, which would have gotten into the territory of that fucked up Marvel comic where The Blob eats somebody. I can’t remember what book that was, but seriously, what the shit!?

Oh, and sorry, Jay. But don’t worry, Invincinator will be back later! I’m not sure when, specifically, probably somewhere in the 130-150 page range. Dr. Fat will also be returning somewhere around then.

This weekend I’ll be participating in the 12 Hour Comic Challenge at Happy Harbor Comics. It’s like the 24 Hour Comic Challenge, but with less hallucinations. If you’re in Edmonton you should stop by and say hi, and also donate to Big Brothers & Big Sisters, which the whole thing is designed to raise money for.

Also, on March 20th I’ll be at the Edmonton Collectible Toy and Comic Show with the Open Door Comics group, which will feature the release of Hell, Inc. #2: Candied Sheep Day.

HEAT #102 – Back Breaker’d

This was my favourite HEAT page so far until I drew page 103. I don’t really like how the first panel turned out, but the rest of it I’m pretty happy with, especially the backbreaker. I actually have a work-in-progress shot of the pencils for this page on my new camera, but I haven’t loaded the camera software onto my computer yet, so the WIP stuff isn’t super relevant now that the final page is done.

Also, speed lines done with a ruler look way, way better. Need to keep that in mind for later.

This update is early because I’m on my way to go see some E-Ville roller derby action. The fact that a sport featuring cute girls in tiny skirts elbow-smashing each other at high speeds isn’t the most popular athletic contest in the world is mind-boggling.

On Wednesday: Vinny LaGrazo tries to end things with his patented Sickle Hold.

And 37 pages later, the creation of contest winner JJBar finally makes his first appearanace where he actually does something! He’ll be showing up more later, because the background information for him is too amusing to only use him once. Also, you aren’t seeing it wrong, Invincinator is actually substantially shorter than everyone else on the page.

This page was far and away the most complex to draw, because when I was writing the script I didn’t anticipate how complicated it would be to lay out the panels. I probably should have anticipated it, though, since the Vertebreaker (or at least the variant that Invincinator uses as his finishing move) is a fairly intricate move that requires a decent amount of space to make look good. It also didn’t occur to me that the front facelock/Manhattan drop combination would require a similar amount of space.  It did result in my favourite panel, though (the third panel, with the impact of the Manhattan drop).

On Wednesday: Ron drops some knowledge on Tim. And somebody gets dropped on their head.

HEAT: Classic Wrestling Moments #2

Bonus update time! Mad Doc Crockett and Ragnar Rasmussen are back for another Classic Wrestling Moment. The other day I finished drawing #3, which will be the first one not to feature Doc and Ragnar.

Doc’s counter to Ragnar’s charge move was supposed to be a Mountain Bomb (which I couldn’t for the life of me remember while I was drawing this), but a couple of misplaced limbs and it turned into an Air Raid Crash. Check out the video below to see the Air Raid Crash in action, courtesy Alex Shelley. Which is probably a better move to end the  match with, anyway. In another “during the pencils” change, the cage went from being the modern steel mesh cage to being a much more sci-fi energy cage. Because while PPW is very purposely on the low end of the tech scale, Galactic Wrestling is the big time. And the big time can afford to have a cage made out of energy beams.

HEAT #13 – The China Shop

The Wooly Bully’s finishing move, The China Shop, was the first finisher I came up with for HEAT that wasn’t already an actual move used by a real wrestler (at least as far as I know). It seems like most big guys use the exact same move set (with the chokeslam being a popular finish), and I wanted to make the Bully a bit more interesting. For some reason I thought of that thing Mr. Perfect used to do, where he would snap mare a guy then flip over him with a neck snap. Using that as a base, I thought about how a giant could use something similar, and decided that instead of the fancy flipping neck snap, he should just flop on the guy. So that’s what the Bully does. Although the “flop” is more of an Ultimate Muscle-style impossibly huge leap, because that’s just more fun. There’s actually a lot of influence from Ultimate Muscle in HEAT.

For those not familiar with Ultimate Muscle, it’s a Japanese manga and anime series that follows the adventures of Kid Muscle and the Muscle League (primarily represented by Terry Kenyon, Dik Dik Van Dik, and Wally Tusket) as they battle evil superhuman wrestlers (the dMp, whose logo is pretty much identical to the black and white nWo logo). It had a weird combination of extreme brutality and slapstick and bathroom humour.

HEAT #11 – Bullied

I say this a lot, but this page was FUN. You also now know why I didn’t bother to name the masked wrestler (in the tags section at the bottom of the post he’s referred to as Masked Jobber). This page tells a lot about Wooly Bully’s move set, which basically centres around being huge and using that size to smash people. Which is a pretty much the standard “giant” wrestler schtick, except that in the comic you don’t have to watch him pondorously shuffle around the ring looking like he’s going to have a heart attack in between moves (I’m looking at you, Great Khali). I typically don’t enjoy the giants, because their matches are pretty much all the same, but for some reason I’ve got a bunch of giants in the comic (although in this case they’re mostly space monsters). Hopefully I can make them more entertaining than their real-life counterparts.

In other news, I spent some time in the last couple of days creating a new roster page with all of the main wrestlers we’ve seen so far. Right now there are only three profiles (Dick the Bastard, Mad Doc Crockett, and Wooly Bully), but I’ll be adding to it as the comic progresses. I’m pretty pleased with how the pages I’ve done so far have turned out, and am looking forward to the roster expanding a bit (which will happen around chapter 3).
